Hey guys and gals,

I'm somewhat new to CGSociety in that I haven't really posted. I've visited the site through the years just by observation and checking on it once in a while but never really participating. It was only recently that I decided to go ahead and start developing it. So with that in mind I am hoping that this topic is in the right place.

The topic I want to discuss is the technique of art criticism.

I wanted to bring this up because last night I was making a general constructive crticism crit on a person's artwork on here (I won't mention names of course) and he/she decides to either delete his/her artwork or remove me from seeing it?

Now this could be because he/she couldn't take a harsh crit or the fact that he/she could not take my crit seriously because I haven't loaded up my portfolio yet. I didn't troll or flame the piece. I simply made general remarks about composition and techniques only being backfired that I don't have artwork in my portfolio to back up my remarks? LOL?

Whether I mention my art schooling or whether I don't, it makes no difference. If you post on a digital art forum, no one's gonna kiss your ass all the time. Hell if I post something up on here I expect it to either both accepted and critiqued with criticism openly. I as taught that a good harsh crit is better than a good comment with a bad thought in their mind.

So I ask you guys what is your opinion on a good critique.. does it HAVE to come from a person who has 'credentials'? Would you simply post a "OMG THATS SO AWESOME!" and give a pat on the back on a work that needs improvement?

Some people I guess dont wanna be crit by someone they see as a random member of a forum i dont know maybe its just an elitist attitude some have.

I think it's up to the person who's receiving the crit. I know which comments will help me, which ones a bit off-base, and which ones are not to be taken seriously at all. I never let the tone bother me, as someone might have something insightful to say, but happens to be a jerk about it. Of course, it's best if everyone was constructive and civilized.

Sometimes less experienced artists (or less talented ones, or even non-artists) may have some very interesting take on things and it'd be wise to listen to them.

But you can't control how others will react to your criticism, so it's up to you if you want to spend the time giving comments. If someone will only listen to well-known or professional artists, then this person might be missing out on some fine comments by everyone else.

Interesting question. First off, I think it's great that you actually took the time to comment on someone's work - considering how huge this community is, sometimes the lack of feedback is surprising. Or maybe that's a function of it being so large - maybe things just slip through the cracks?

That being said, I personally will only post a crit or comment if the person says "comments/critique welcome" or something along those lines. I'll assume they're not looking for it otherwise if they don't ask.

If your comments were made in a constructive manner, then I don't see what the problem is... It's up to the individual to determine their validity - without getting offended. You know the old saying, you can't please everyone...
