Hy, all!
I think all of us like to watch cartoons, SO
for the next MGAC, I propose you to model you favourite cartoon`s hero/heroine.
Maybe he wil be Spiderman or Bart Simpson or the little mermaid or somebody else.
Breathe new 3D low-poly life into your loved hero/heroine!

Specs :

Triangle budget : 1001 (both sided triangle count as two) Edited
Texture budget : maximum 1024*1024 of whatever you want

Guidelines :

You must provide a viewport shot with textures, a wireframe shot with the tris count, and the textures.
Also you must to provide a screen shot of the original character you've chose to model.

Deadline :

Monday 28 Feb 2008 11.59pm GMT

Good luck!

Yeaaah I'm in !

However I have 2 remarks.

I think number of tris and texture resolution have to be consistent (not sure it's the word :S) 750 tris is a low budget (it could be a model for DS) and 1024 is a big resolution, for hl2 character for example.

I know that MGAC shouldn't exceed a week, but we all have a life, a work, studies, familly, friends (or not :p), and maybe a short deadline discourage some of us. Maybe, a deadline including 2 week-ends is preferable.

But again, this is just my opinion :)

i'm in too !

i agreed with clanker, 2 weeks should be better !

i have a question. I can make any type of maps (normal, spec, alpha, difuse...), as long i keep it 1024 x 1024 ?

thanks for the awnser, and let us know about the dead line.

edit: it could be a heroine too, or just guys ?

I missed the last mgac as was caught working. An extended deadline would be great. I also agree with the texture limits its huge for 750 tris. A 512 is ok. 256 will make more sense. But the topic is interesting :)

Gotta be said, this is MGAC 54, everyone seems to have been able to manage a one week limit up until now, I wouldnt change it, its the rules, its there in the image, if you can't do it, dont. Deadlines are there to be stuck to.

I understand your point of view mrgrotey (even if I've seen some mgac exceed a week :p)

Anyway, I'll try to do Leonardo from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, in one week (meaning 3 hours sunday, maybe ^^)

OK. Let's increase triangles limit to 1001 :). Is that ok?
About texture`s size I diceded to provide you posibility to make more detailed texture if you want. I wanted to do less restriction for textures. If you wanna make smaller texture you may do it :)

8bit_Mind Yes, I ment any number os 1024x1024 textures (one diffuse, one normal, one specular and etc). And yes, you can model heroine too, I corrected my post, thanks!

So, 750 or 1001 ?
I wasn't at home this w-e, so it will be hard for me to do something, but I try =)

I`ve wanted to know your opinion about the budget, but nobody replied.
So let`s do 1001 triangle budget :)

Ok, thx Yunga :)

thanks yunga, i've busted the 750 tris on my first try, now 1001 is way better !

someone knows how i change my statistic (since i can't find the polycount tool on max 9) to show tris instead of polys ? i'm using poly modelling mode...

Clanker

customize>viewport configuration>statistics> then check triangle count and show statistics
(hotkey 7)

guys, i can't finish this one in time. I've busted my time trying to do a super woman and i can't make a decent hair, so i'm back to study this really low poly models and alpha hair.

Wow the first zero entry mgac ive ever seen I think

Well, I 've got my model. But again, no time for the texture :/
I'll post it when I'll get back home.

Can't you post your model anyway 8bit ? Maybe we could give you some crits and advices too.

there's still time!

antodonnell

I feel its the time-limit. I know the MGAC have a 1 week time frame and you shoud not enter if you dont have the time but 1 Week with a full time job, family, life means its about an 8-10 hour comp :) hence no finished work.

Clanker

I agreed with that. However maybe recent subjects are a little bit too ambitous and we should return to something more basic (I'm thinking about 12 tri challenge for example)
And probably dominance war III takes some competitors too.

Clanker

Ok so here is my entry...
996 tris (including shadow and swords) and 256*256 map.
The texture is a simple render to texture with basic material. No time for painting  I've done quickly the unwrap too. Could be better :/ No time for putting him in a cool pose neither.
Anyway there it is ! :)

hello guys, here is mine entry. It's about 2 hours of modelling and i haven't time for the textures, hope you guys like...

the challenge is over, but i will continue this...

The reason i'm posting my work here is because isn't fair a great game artist like clanker (ho made the olaf model, he rocks !) doesn't have anyone to compete and win the first place...

man, you model my favorite turtle ! you rocks great !

here is my model !

It was a really good topic. Nice job Clanker really well modeled leonardo. You could always post a finished version afterwards. Be a shame to leave it there. Same for 8bit mind, Conan rocks. More please

Clanker
02-29-2008, 10:03 AM
Haha thanks mates ! I'm not working in game industry and I wouldn't call me a great artist but anyway, many thanks :)
Wow that conan model rocks too ! Really clean toplogy and nice silhouette.

thanks guys, i'm thinking in do a same topic as i found in this site. (http://boards.polycount.net/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=96988&page=0&fpart=1&vc=1)

we could post our low poly works and it will be a second exercise like mgac, but in a more freely way.

and thanks for the comments, i have to see a lot of low poly works for reference, because i was making models with 1200 tris or more.

So, we got the winner - Clanker!

Clanker, your turtle is perfect! Leonardo is 100% recognizable.

8bit_Mind, your Konan is cool!.. or this is young Arnold Schwarzenegger? :)
Very good model.

Sorry, I reply a little late.
I hope next MGAC will be more crowded.

Clanker

Thanks Yunga :)
I think 8bit_Mind has done a really good job. I'm sure your model with an animation, will deform better than mine.
So, since I've won the last but one mgac, I propose to my great challenger 8bit_Mind to decide of the new subject (if you want, of course)

8bit_Mind
03-03-2008, 01:47 AM
thanks for the critics guys, it means a lot to me...

i tottaly agree with yunga, "leonardo is 100% recognizable".

and clanker, i apreciate that you give to me the chance to choose the next mgac, but i'm new to 3d modelling and i am more to get a challenge and try make in the subject. so, go ahead, make a new one mgac and someday i will win and then i will have more skill to determine mine.

but i repeat, i am glad that you offer me a chance and i'm counting you as a friend:thumbsup:
