Didn't see ART in the list. Is that considered version 7?
I started with ART. Many moons, Kimosabe.

My first version was Cinema 4D 2.1 Pro for the AMIGA. It was on a cover disc of a magazine. Since then I kept an eye on Cinema and later on I got the CE+ version which I upgraded to version 8.5. Nowadays I can always play with the latest toys

6.0.
You never forget your first c4d.
After ripping my hair out over the 80 crashes a day in EI on mac OS9, the place I worked at decided we should switch to either c4d or LW. Glad it was c4d.
I used Strata and FormZ prior to this too.
got to play with 8.5xl for about a week before 9 finally shipped. Been sinking every spare coin I have into keeping it up to date and expanding the toolset. Now I practically have 10.5 studio; save sketch and toon and unlimited net. I hope Maxon waits a while until they release 11. I'm sick of rationalizing upgrade purchases to my better half:scream:
I did it in a similar way as kvb, started out when 9.0 came out, and it was indeed a game of save money, send some to maxon for the modules and updates.
Currently i've got 10.5 with s&t, ar, hair and mograph.
I also hope forrelease 11 to be next year, i ran out of money last week.

Technically it must have been version 5. A limited trial shipped on a cover CD for a magazine so I installed it work and tried it out. Previously I had used a free copy of Strata 3D but never really liked or even understood it. With C4D it was so easy I was just blown away and when XL 6 was released I jumped the Maxon Educational License programme so I consider 6 my first version (I still have the box with CDs and manuals standing in my shelf!).

I started with GO. I feel pretty lucky to have found C4D. Back then I was looking all over the place for some 3D software, and they were all expensive, limited to the PC for the most part.
After a few months with it (GO), I downloaded the trial of r6, was blown away with the ease of use, and ordered it, but r7 showed up instead!

'Technically', I started with Cinema 4D R7.3 XL with the free (?) upgrade to R8. But I was privy to the original Amiga version so many eons ago (R1 if I'm not mistaken) before having any real desire to do 3D CG. One of the perks of being close to Commodore's HQ and part of PAUG (Philadelphia Amiga Users Group).

Used Bryce since I was 11, when I was older I saw some awesome radiosity renders made in CInema4d 7.3, especially the renderosity gallery was very colorfull at that time so I downed the demo and the rest is history!

R6 and coming from Strata. There was this guy called Arcanus in the Strata forums. Everytime someone talked about switching software, he would recommend C4D, I tried the demo and liked it.

I started a 5.x. I went through all the MetaCreations software. RayDream 3D, RayDream Studio. I think I got C4D through a side grade or something.
I still have an old version of Painter in the paint can they used to use!!

I buddy of mine bought a G4 iMac (15" first gen) about 5-1/2 6 years ago on Ebay. It had a bunch of software loaded on it when it came. Among the titles loaded was C4D XL 7. It started me down the path to 3D righteousness ;)

v7 here, although I got the v6 disks/manual with my purchase. Came from trueSpace ( ) after trying out the LW, EI, and C4D demos extensively. Haven't regretted it for a second.

Played with the demos of C4D 4 from cover magazines. Jumped when the 6 freebie came out and forked out for the 6CE version.
Qualified for the educational licence (tutor) for V.8. Got a good deal on a full licence transfer of 9.5 Studio. Been up to date with the full kit ever since.
Well, at least I can say that I've contributed to the choccy biscuit & coffee fund for Björn and the team. :D
Cheers, Alan.

Another former frustrated Strata 3D user. Never was really comfortable with it. Started with C4D R9. 100% satisfaction.

I started with 8 maybe 8.5, made the dreadfull mistake of dumping it for maya for two years came back to 9.5 because maya does not love me and started hating myself because I learned how stupid I was for ditching it. Wish I would have stayed with it the whole time.

A friend gave me his copy of version 5. Although I hated the v5 interface, I saw it had potential.
But I moved from Infini-D to the Electric Image + FormZ bundle ($10,000.00), because I was looking for some serious high-end power.
Then, Paul Babb, the former Electric Image Marketing Director now Maxon USA President, showed a Demo of C4D r6 at our EI user group. I was so impressed I handed over my credit card at the end of the meeting, even though I had the new LightWave 6 on backorder. The new C4D Object Manager and live objects just blew me away. Nobody else had anything like it. Well, guess what, Lightwave 6 never got opened when it arrived a few weeks later. Been a devout C4D user ever since.

I'd been a Photoshop fanatic since v1 in 1990.
By 2001 I was pushing PS way too hard, trying to mimic 3D imagery in 2D, thinking 3D was just too difficult. Then at a Mac show in London, on the Maxon stand, the demonstrator (Mash of 3D Fluff) built and lit a model stage set for me literally in seconds - I was blown away and bought V 6.0 there and then on the stand. Professionally Its changed everything I do.

Is CE6 considered as r.6? In that case its that. Otherwise its 8.5 which I upgraded to from CE6+.
CE6 was on the coverdisk from 3DWorld magasin. Very good idea, it was through that version that Cinema4D got my attention.

2.1 for Amiga here. Then I had quite a few years of pause and returned home when R8 was announced. Spent that time as cameraman and gaffer and whatelse, then was asked to do a little 3D-thingie for fun and now it is my profession. Circle has closed.

Saw Cinema 5 in computer arts in 95 I think, loved it. but switched to 5.3 I think after leaving crash happy 3d studio max 2, and my boss decided he didn't wanna pay for more upgrades. Also tried LW, Truespace, Softimage 3D and a beta of maya 1 and houdini, but I got stuck at version 6 CE. maybe I should upgrade to 11 if it has a good render engine. I have to use 3d studio at my new work, so working in cinema for my personal projects is pure joy.

Funny--had a "sort of" similar exeprience. We used to attend a local EI user group outside of Philadelphia-(really miss going to these). We weren't graced with Paul Babb's presence, however at the end of one of the sessions (circa 2000), one of the guys running the group gave us a run through of c4d. Our jaws hung open. The concept of a good stable all-in-one 3d mac compatible modelling/rendering/animation package that had a fast NICE renderer (which wasnt simple phong rendering like EIs), easy to use, and packed with effects---and also WORKED. We were looking at LW as I mentioned above--but I just remember after loading the demo myself getting very giddy at each step I took. Little things that we take for granted now like non-destructive booleans and deformers were very exciting to discover and were immediate time savers.
Cinema4D Go was my introduction.
We were using Lightwave v5. at the time. Swapped to Cinema and it's all been good.

My entrance is a little different from what I've been reading here. I started out in 3D on the mechanical side (otherwise known as the dark side) using SDRC's I-DEAS software on HP UX machines. No matter how good your design was, the deliverables looked terrible. SDRC was bought and folded into other software and that software migrated down to PCs but the output quality never really improved much. I started using C4D with V8 to pretty up mechanical designs and animations. Haven't looked back since and spend more and more time in C4D with each new version.

Version 7 sealed the deal for me. When that was released, I had been primarily using LW for all work projects since LW 5.x and had also done work projects in Ray Dream Studio and owned all the versions of trueSpace ( - as Adam noted) up to that time. I have some very non-fond memories of tS and never used it for a paying project. But the pace at which Maxon developers have been able to add features to Cinema is simply amazing. Granted, there are always some expectations that won't get met, but the things that show up that may not be expected (S&T, Hair, MoGraph) are fabulous. I likes me modo too, but it's hard to think of using anything as the core basis for a project besides Cinema. The stability alone still deserves bragging rights.

Came from LW7. Due to bad support of the mac platform I decided to go to C4D which I knew from the Amiga. I bought XL 9 when I got offered a very good deal. Haven't regretted it one bit. Bought a few additional modules over time. I am very happy with the package.

R6 CE, that was a free demo in a magazine. At that time I just wanted a simple modeling app. After trying trueSpace, Cararra, Rhino (which is still sweet), and Amapi, I could not believe how intuitive the Cinema interface was! Quickly registered the version, which is still sitting on the shelf, and then went to the academic R9. Who could resist Clothilde and then Hair?! Upgraded to commercial, and it's been a race between Maxon and the checkbook ever since.

My first C4D experience was with the Amiga. C4d was given away on a mag cover disc.
I can't remember the exact version that was. I've still got it. I'll have to look it out and install it on my Amiga 1200, which I'll have to find.

Sorry to go OT, but if anyone here remembers "Access!" terminal program on the Amiga, that was by your's-truly :).
(Imagine how cool a modern-day Amiga would be by now if the original design/tech team had kept at it)
