this painting was at first very personally. I was with my friend kim in a park in our lunch time. kim has red hair and many freckles :)
I wanted to draw a funny character based on her look.
some days before I saw on TV a report about those toads called Bufo marinus, many ppl use this toads as intoxicant, while they lick on the toads back. red haired kim + my addiction for ice cream + toxic toad = painting idea.
as always I did a sketch, scanned the sketch and started to paint in photoshop. at first I filled the skin with the basic color and added shadows and lights. the same I did with toad and clothes. in the end I added a rough background to get the fine weather mood.

Wow, wonderful character and the colors choices feel spot on! Only minor crit if I may is with the BG: The clouds and ferris wheel feel crisper or more in focus than the trees, but the trees are closer to us so that kinda breaks any DOF effects.

A minor crit, if I'm allowed: the green colour mass composed by the toad and the background breaks the depth slightly and unbalances a bit the composition, specially with the colourful ice cream balls on the right. Maybe if the background was flipped horizontally would read better, so there'll be more sky behind the poisonous amphibian...?

Whaha, I finally found my twin sister kim.
Very very very cool picture with a lovely frog. I would like to see the reaction of your friend seeing this picture.
