View Full Version : My experience with 2 GB of RAM
bonthan 02-21-2008, 05:20 AM I built my own computer like a few months ago and it has been working fine with 3ds max and Zbrush and then one day I decided to try to use my computer with a higher polycount model in Z brush and then export it to 3ds max. After I've done sculpting some stuff in Zbrush with 99, 9 85 polygons, I imported that model to 3ds max and what a horror it was, it was one of the slowest speed I've ever experienced on this computer. So having that, I tried to bring the polygon count up to more than a million polygons and 3ds max said that I ran out of memory and I have 2 GB of memory and I thought it was average. I guess I will not be able to texture that high res model unless I increase my memory. :(. What do you think?

more RAM and probably better graphicscard (you o not mention which one is currenlty installed)
2 GB RAM isn't much considering the OS might eat up 7-800 MB just at launch

Look into exporting normal maps out of zbrush. Either that or displacement maps. That way your only having to deal with those million polygons at render time. There are many tutorials on cgtalk and the zbrush forums on how to do this. Just search around.

Oh, one other thing. You need to turn on the /3gb switch in order for 3dsmax to use more then 1.5 gig of ram. Just google for "/3gb switch".
