Normally in modelling I use smoothing groups to put the hard edges where I want and so far this has more or less done the trick.. but this week I had major headaches with say doing a simple window, whereby the mesh before the hard edge would overlap that hard edge and no matter what values, I just couldn't rid it. I've now found the reason why but wondered if any of you could explain better to me why it happens.

OK take a rectangle...your window pane. This is recessed by extrusion from the main surface and those extruded edges given a low value in smoothing groups with the sucessful result of a hard edge.
However.... if for whatever reason you take the edges where the main surface meets the extruded edges ans chamfer it much distance.. the mesh will then overlap the hard edge. It appears that if you have the faces that are bordering your window at as closer to 90 degrees no problem..... however if those faces then meet the corners at say 45 degrees due to chamfering the mesh will 'crawl' over them...anyone know why this happens? :)

I don't really understand the problem. Could you post an image as an example?

Yup, we're going to need a pic.

You may want to have a look at the "Theoretical Sub-D" thread in the max subforum. Lost of good info on working with meshmooth, how it works, how to make holes, hard edges, etc.

It's a huge thread, though, so be warned. A FAQ is under development so better encapsulate the information.

Again, please post an image. I'm sure we can help.
