Thanks Nihilicon. Ill post some of the actual character as well. And I think by having him concepted out I will have a clear idea of any/all the accessories for the beast.

nice mount/pet concept, nice form and flow, cant wait to see character concept
The dragon sketchs are older, but I wanted to throw them in here to see what people think.
The little thumbnails are the actual character/rider. His culture is very tribal and nomadic. Wearing a young dragon skull as his helm, and the bones of dead dragons as his light armor. Light cloth protects the rider from the elements. People of his land have a special connection with the dragons of their world. I guess kinda like dinotopia, but not as pleasant.
Please let me know what you guys think. More to come.

It's really getting there. I really like the concept of the first dragon you posted. I think it was a really nice move going for the more primate body, since we've seen the whole dragon thing before, i think this really makes it more interesting and original. As far as the rider goes, I know ur in the early stages of designing him, but the dragon is still more interesting. I can't wait to see how this pans out!

feels so hard to comment on something so out of the ordinary :)
but looking at the proportions in pic 1 and seemingly similar in pic 2 perhaps you should add some kind of eye-catcher that has to do with the rider so he doesn't dissapear on that big lizard? big sadle, banners? a reaaally big/long lance (with banners?)... if he can manage it... something that makes his presence larger in the image anyhow?
now you're downright obliged to post more :D really want to see this one developed!
I did these this last Saturday afternoon. Trying to come up with an interesting head design for the dragon/reptile/mount thing.
This guy I did yesterday based off of a small thumbnail I did a few nights ago. Not really diggin the rider/mount dragon idea anymore, especially seeing others are now doing it. So I came up with this big guy. I believe I am still within the rules of the War but please correct me if Im wrong.
Below is a full description.
Yggdrasil, a god of the forest. A tall and gentle being comprised of the Earth itself. He cares for all living things, and strives to protect that which he loves most: the forests. Something of a myth, Yggrasil is rarely seen by any outside of his realm. He is usually seen as just a collection of old trees and rocks in the middle of a clearing. He burrows down into the Earth, exposing only his backside. His underside is coverd in thick moss and roots, and his limbs are strong as stumps. His stride is long and heavy, digging his fingers into the dirt as he steps. His gaping mouth resembles the flesh eating plants of the tropics, however he is nothing like these carnivores. He is gentle and kind to all living things, big or small.
War was being waged on all fronts at this time. But soon word spread throughout the land of a new threat. Machines, striking from far worlds in hopes to destroy all life. By the time the fires spread to the forests, Yggdrasil himself stepped foot onto the battlefield. His weapon large, crafted from the very trees and rocks of his land. But within it a light glowed. And with a powerful swing, Yggdrasil thrusted his weapon into the earth and from it life began. Roots and flowers and ferns sprung up all around him. The machines looked on at this knew challenger. Quickly the roots and vines sprung up from the ground at their feet, intertwining with their circuits and wires. Any close to Yggdrasil felt the mighty swing of his arm, as his weapon crunched all metal.
Another update. Just playin with some weapon designs for the Yggdrasil. Comments and Crits appreciated and welcomed :D
I really like your last concept.
Especially his peaceful whale like appearance.
His fingers look a bit too blunt, maybe make it more root like?
Maybe you could look for other material for the weapons, rock for example.
It's a bit strange to use wood since the creature it self is of wood and protector of the forests. It's like using an arm or leg as a weapon :)

wow I love the design too, I repeast Art2's whole sentiment on every point :)
I love how you're doing roots as ribs! I've done sort of the same on mine.. seems like a good idea :)
imo it's as fitting for compo as any entry I've seen :)
are you going to put living (with leaves) trees somewhere? would be awesome to see :)
seen the trees in Ico? something like that maybe?
other than that I think he needs some other element apart from what he has.. wood, greenery and stone to not become too homogenous maybe.. but won't know if I'm not wrong until I see colours I guess. suggestions of grass look nice! can't wait to see :)

you damn hippy, you should change those little leafy guys into green peace members. they come flooding off of him when ever they hear a tree scream.
sorry, i dont get to poke fun irl since they moved me upstairs, i was just browsing around and saw this guy.
ok, now for a real crit, he needs a tail, if he is hunched over like that and his head is that far out than he is gonna need a counter balance. the body looks based off of an ape, but ape heads are right up on the shoulder (and yet have the same amount of vertibrae as a giraffe...odd) so thats why they dont have as much of a need for a tail. since his head is extended out he needs a counter balance

Man! When i was looking to your first sketches i said to my self : "ha! dinos, that's a bit cliché".:eek:
But I admit to you that I judge a bit to fast your concept.:sad: That last pieces that you post...My jaw fell on the floor. I really like that creature. Then I suttenly understand that your previous sketches what in fact a kind of anatomic search.
I'll will follow the evolutions of your good work.

Okay some more progress. Did some blocking out finally of the character. Started with some Zspheres in Zbrush and refined in Max. Im still dialing in the proportions, but any crits on poly flow would be great.
Art2: I agree the weapons arent doing it for me either, Ill post my latest concept for his weapon/artifact weapon thingy as soon as I draw them haha. I have a good idea of what he will bring to the war.

Great sketches, love the scale of this monster and a nice start on modeling too.
Just working with the proportions still, not worrying about details. Once this is settled I will be doing geometry clean up in Max, getting ready for the next Zbrush pass.
Right now your looking at 2078 polys on this guy. Not to bad, still plenty of room to flex.

lookin cool man. the only thing i spot rigtht off is the deltoid to tricep transition. right now it is at the same level as the bicep roll in, and it is giving this sausage link effect there. bring up the tricep more toward the top of the arm to give it bit more rythm.

I agree with the biceps/triceps comment by richkid.
Also his butt and upper legs are almost too cute :)
I know it's in the early stages. Maybe tweak the proportions a bit?

This is a fantastic concept - and a great legend to work off. I think you found the perfect head design to suit the nature if the character (not meant to be a pun. No, seriously).
If you really feel like he needs a weapon, I think I like that straight up log-club on the right in your weapons sketch. It's got the makeshift charm of the other weapons, but the ax seems too threatening to match the character and the scepter seems unsuitable as a bludgeon.
The only real complaint I would have is that in the sketches, the superficial design seems to have some kind of moss underpants. To make such a unique and clever bipedal character and humanize it by making anything in the design resemble clothing seems to take away from it. But then that's just the interpretation I make from one sketch. None the less: killer stuff here, mac.

Showing some slooooow progress on my Dom war. Not sure if Im going to make it for the deadline, but Im going to push hard. Regardless, I will finish this guy. Ive just been real busy with work and find that I am without energy to stare at a screen any longer by the time I get home.
Here I am just showing they final proportions and the very humble beginings to the detail pass. I will most likely retopologize for the final model in Zbrush. Comments and Crits Appreciated! :D

looking really cool! :) about the hugeness and the trees, it strikes me that probably the primary scale clue will be the trees on his back.. it seems like a challenging task to do trees that are so from a distant that they are more like broccoli model-wise :P I guess you'll do alpha planes from those trunks? or how?
