Hi. I decided to start building a new system to do my 3d work. Was wondering if anyone would be so kind as to give some feedback on what I have come up with so far. I intend to use Maya, XSI, and Zbrush, with high poly modeling and rendering using global illumination with mental ray. So far I have this on my list

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
Kingston 2 GB DDR2 1066 memory kit
GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L Motherboard
ThermalRight Ultra 120

I think I have to buy a new vid card as all the mother boards I am finding lack AGP and I can't reuse my 6800gt (I am guessing that means AGP is obsolete now?) I don't know what cards to look for yet as I am reading problems with Nvidia 8 series cards and Maya.

Any feed back, or posting your rigs and experiences would be appreciated. Thanks.

Also go PCI-express for video card, AGP is out of date.

Do a search on 'Q6600' in this forum and you'll come across lots of decent set ups for really good prices. And whatever you decide don't skimp out on the PSU.

1066 DDR2 will not give any noticable perfomance increase.
Go for 800 or even 667 RAM.

q6600 good choice!
you might wait (march!) for the q9300 that will be priced like the q6600.

Why do you need the Thermalright 120? U plan to overclock?
otherwise it's overkill, I would invest the money n another 2GB of RAM

2 Gigs of RAM is pretty small for FG, GI, and High poly count I think...

This helps me too, thanks for the news.

I've head the 7900s work well in Maya. You can always go to the aatodesk webpage and check their hardware list.
