I have to be the first to say Great Job! Since you are looking for critiques, this is what I see. Since you are doing this as a posed model, they should have that feeling of relaxation to the models when they are posed, as gravity would effect everything. I see the Right arm of the female can move better, also hair on the female is always a plus, as well as the left hand of the female needs some work. I dont know what program you are using, but Great job none the less. Great job with the textures, would you be so kind as to tell us the method you used to create the shader.

Great job. I would also like to see how you made that texture too.
One more thing the right breast on the female looks different than the left.

hey thanks for the comments so far...keep them coming.....the shader is just a marble shader..nothing more...i also have ambient occlusion pass....hdr for some fill light...and three lights to finish the job....by the way if anyone wants i can show the wires......all quads....5 triangles between the two of them

Good Job, by the way thanks for telling us how you did the textures.

OMG...........That is some real impressive geometry you've got there. I love the fact that you modeled these two so simply, yet so strong.... I can see the demo reel of them already....
Yes,Yes what program have you utilized to create these two???????:bounce:
spacemunky
05-02-2003, 09:32 PM
thanks for the kind words.....the work for these two was done in XSI....the very first class i every took in 3D was two years ago in September...and it was a modeling for video games class, so I kind of started off with a base of keeping the polycount low...even when working high poly...it makes making changes and deformations much easier.

I really have no crit with you models or textures at all. I think they are really working right now. My only problem is the pedastal. It's very bright and doesn't seem to work with the material on the statue in any way. Maybe a more muted pedestal with a tone as the background color will help it alot. But that's just the fine art side of me talking! Great Job for sure!

Very nice! I was just wondering though, if you used real models as reference i.e. did you get some models to pose for you while you made ref drawings or photos?
I'm working on those kind of sculptural models myself and am curious of your technique.
Cheers

05-03-2003, 11:33 PM
believe it or not i had no specific reference...i used to do medical and anatomical illustration...so i used some photos here and there but 90% is from memory...thats how i did them so fast
Awesome awesome modeling. It's great, and you hardly ever see a two-person pose like this, in the "classical sculpture" vein. Only one small crit. There's obviously a story behind the pose, with the bodies holding some sort of tension, and the upward gaze. The woman's right shoulder/upper arm is tensed quite a bit - you can feel it. I would carry this tension into the hand, maybe with it rotated upward, like she's interacting with the man more, to continue the gesture her arm is making. It really is terrific work. Man, with this and your other work posted here, you've got some great stuff.

Let me just say, since nobody else is saying it that these models SUCK! JUST PLAIN SUCK...you would be better served if you were to model things such as..oh i don't know, a cathedral and WW II fighter planes. I'm just kidding, your models are great! I have nothing bad to say about them at all. I must bow down before you and pay homage to the skillz. We're not worthy.

wow, awesome modeling!
Again, great image. I like the new version - one comment, just watch the tangent that was created by her right hand and his right thigh. You might want to rotate or move the hand just a bit so her hand is silhouetted outside his leg, and you'll lose the tangent.
I emailed you back - hope you got it!

i like the new image very much ( white is better than the black background).
But as stated above, her right arm should interact a bit more with him.
Maybe instead of spreading it away from her body, you can lift her hand up to his head and she can touch his right cheek or ...
just an idea..
BIGGER RESOLUTION.PLEASE.
how long did it take to render one of these images?

WOW! The modeling is impressive but I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the simplisity of your wireframe. Was this modeled with nurbs by any chance?

yes I'll second the idea for moving her right hand so there's more play/ twisting going on.
for the bacckournd - generally draker colors will give you a more accurate sense of value in my experience, maybe a slightly lighter brown or somthing would work?
Great Job!!

maybe its just me, but those models kinda look like the default xsi man and woman models...
they both have great line flow, but yours looks more effieceint, since its not animatable...
did u use the dirtmap shader from www.xsibase.com ? if not, check it out, its really really useful.
I'm assuming you're using xsi... since you're wireframe looks xsi-ish :P

wow....i really appreciate making the front page...thank you for all the great comments...and keep them coming...I will have some new renders tomorrow I hope...to answer some questions...the rendering time is about a minute and a half per frame....no those are not the deafult XSI people...I would never use them upon threat of death....and yes I am using the dirt shader, its my favorite tool in XSI's rendering arsenal. Thanks again for the comments...i'll post some updates soon.

Well, The wire frame image you post up looks like NUBs form. So why i say that.
So, You did it with Softimage? I remmember Polygon wire can shows like this form only in Softimage.

i agree, that dirtmap just brings anything to life! all the little details show up better with it!
xsi sub-d's (or geometry approximation) as of version 3 have a nice smooth NURBS look to them, almost makes the wireframe as nice as the render, heheh.
i like to show wireframe using constant view, with lines turned on, and a little depth fog. (hidden line mode shows any clusters, which can be annoying.)

I have to say that these models are realy nice. just one comment though becouse it is realy freakin' me out (sorry)
the left foot of the female is a little deformed i think.
and her legs also look a little weird from this angle. I dont know what it is but it looks a little odd
dont mean to be crual or anything ;)
Extraordinary modeling, texturing, lighting and anathomy work, really impressive technique of anathomy modeling, I really love the pic, congratulations!

Nice anatomy study.. Nice renders!
Well done, i see the shadown below the female breast is disturbing, maybe u can add lights to blend it off...:surprised
I really like it. I would like to add that his hand on her body could be more firm, closer and tighter to her body... It feels a bit floaty.
But your modelling is great!

05-10-2003, 03:29 PM
Great work and I love the simplicity and clarity of your meshes.
Crits...her left foot does indeed look a bit 'ooer missus', the area between her breasts and shoulders looks a bit off, though I think this is emphasised by the breasts themselves which look a bit on the large side perhaps overly rounded, there's little hint of any kind of sag, which most that aren't siliconed to hell have, and the knees could possibly do with more definition, though I realise that is far far easier said than done..
Requests....would like to see much bigger renders if possible and also rear or rear/side view.
Can you please also work a hell of a lot slower so I don't feel so envious!!!!!!!!!!!!  :)
Nice on the hand fix, and congrats on the first page!

My only crit would be the fact that the feet dont seem to have much weight on them. The toes bend up as if there is no weight applied.
Did you model them in that pose or did you use bones/rig to pose them?
katon
05-10-2003, 11:16 PM
i would ahve to agree with digital red. the feet seem lie they need some weight on them. it is almost as if they are inflated by air. especialy the guys right foot. kepp it up

wow...you guys are posting some very nice comments...here is a small update I changed the position of the feet as best i could but I'm new at rigging in XSI so my deformations are a little crappy in some areas...i'll post them in bind poses soon so people can see what it looked like when i modeled it...other than that i went back to the black background and changed a few minor things based on people's suggestions....thanks again for all the great comments. Hey man, the modeling itself looks really nice. My only beef with it is the shadows. The one coming under the woman's right breast seems a little extreme, especially when compared to the shadow cast by the guy's jaw. And its a completely different direction than Im seeing under her right hand. Your may be trying to have multiple light sources, which is fine, I just think the right breast's shadow is a little distracting. Other than that, the model looks really nice, especially given the timeframe you had. Well done.

I will write more once I get sleep. Until then, I love what I see.
One of the first things that I noticed that I didn't like (by this, I mean I saw a whole lot of things I did like) was the hands of the male figure. For someone so muscular he seems to have thin fingers. Mainly the thumb is what I noticed.
davemcd
05-11-2003, 09:05 AM
Nice work spacemonkey, and as others have said nice use of geometry. Someone already mentioned about the mans left hand not looking quite right and i'd have to agree. it kind of looks a bit too floaty like he's afraid to touch her. i think the fingers should really be against the geometry there and the heal of his hand against her body.... this might push the elobow out a bit but dont be afraid to let there geomtry touch... you can even displace some of the geometry where the two bodies meet to make it look a bit more like flesh is being pushed out of the way...
Same thing could be said for the soles of the feet could interact with the floor a bit better too. Sqaush em flatter at the bottom, splay the toes and make em look like there's a lot of weight there.
I also think that the womans breasts could have a bit more gravity to them, pull them in and down a bit would be my opionion. I just dont think that without a bra they'd stay quite that shape.
Hope my crits arent too harsh, i'm just hoping i can help you do your very best work, Keep it up

Looks really cool - very good use of organised geometry...

Awesome model and texture, no complaints here. The only thing that I would suggest is that it should be in either a park or art gallery location. If it were in the park you could maybey have a pigeon sitting on it or something...

I like the way you have made the woman compared to the skinny ones we usually see.
I have to agree with davemcd about the soles of the feet, and while looking at the pic that u posted on the previous page I noticed the foot of the woman is very straight in shape compared to the mans.
the dark patch that appears on the womans foot on that shot highlights an area that I would suggest that you remove to make her foot more femine and realistic. And mirroring the shape of the mans foot in the same shot.
I hope you get what I'm trying to explain here.
great use of form, I like these alot.

I have to say you've done a great job so far. There's alot of posts here, ;) I can't take the time to read them all so I hope I'm not repeating anything.
For crits I'd say that the hard shadows could become soft. Area light maybe? I know I know area lights + hdr in xsi takes alot of time to render but I'm shure the qualaty of the piece would increase. ;)
I'd say that what's bugging me from the start is the feet that feel rounded under. They feel weird and your caracters seem to somewhat levitate over the platform. You could also change the angle of her left hand so we don't see too much the interior of it cause from that angle something looks off. By the way I prefer the pose on page 4. ;)
Great job! Keep finetuning It'll be perfect.
P.S. Maybe eventually you could have a picture of a museum blurer behind them instead of the black bg...
