View Full Version : Animation: "The Tape" my first 3d short is online

After many months of easy critisising, it was about time, to take a nerve wrecking decision and post some of my work. The amount of talent that hangs around this forum is realy overwhelming, but still i have to show you my humble 3D short.
http://users.otenet.gr/~dennik/images/Tobby_tape_big.jpg
This is my first serious try with character animation. It started as a lipsync test, but one idea after another, pushed me to add more and more animation, and eventually it turned out to be a short movie. I hope you like it!
If not, please take the time to say why, and help me improve myself.
For those who don't understand whats happening, i have to say that there is a reference to an old and VERY popular 3D short from the past.
Thanks for your time.

Try right click --> Save As, to save it to your disk and see it that way. Probably your browser can't play mpegs directly.

Nice job..

It's unlikely that you will get sued unless of course you actually try to make any money from this sort..

The othe rproblem is that most festivals will not allow entries that cannot prove they have the rights to use music.. so that will limit the amount of exposure that you can get by making such an animation.

The good news is that there is no problem with doing this and submitting the work for employment.

Nice animation !!!
I quite like he subject, I'd sure like to see him karaoke a whole bunch of hits... ;) Animation is a bit hesitating I think you could really show the postures (more accelarations/pauses), else the lighting could be better, c'mon its a still :scream:
and sound yes.. but can't be 3Dmaster and sound engineer
Good job !

Yes Az0r, the Alien Song is a realy inspirational piece of animation, and i'm glad to see that people are aware of this, because otherwise my short doesn't make any sense!

I used Lightwave 3D for rendering and modeling, and Messiah Studio, for rigging and animation. It took about 6-7 whole days to render.

:) this one really made me laugh!! I loved it, the only thing I could possibly suggest is to make his sidestepping out of the room a little more exaggerated, the bit at the end? I found myself wanting it to be more exaggerated.

Very nice piece, certainly made me laugh. "Alien Song" reference is genius.

What was the production schedule like? i.e. set building, character building and especially, the animation!??

Great work Dennik:thumbsup:

that was funny. Nice work overall. Some of the expressions could have been a bit more quick, espeically when he got worried, I didn't catch that at first.

You really don't have to change anything, great work!

I liked it....but some of the movement was a bit stereotypical animation wise.... Like some reactions...I don't know why I feel this way..they were good though...

Maybe you could push the characters and go a bit more extreme....unless that's a rigging/binding issue ;)

I like the alien song reference...I also saw a similarity to the way the voice acting sounded and Creature Comforts....but that might just be me.

Good job...I wish I had something that good for my reel....working on it

OMG DUDE THAT WAS TIGHT!!! i wish i could do that!!! it was funny do how he turned on that first song and turned it off LMAO!! that was good man....might want to work on the sound of the ball bouncing. it sounds like its comin from a tape recorder. anyway that was the best short ive ever seen. keep it up man!!!

I think you mean the part were he pants, sighs then hit his head on the table, I agree this has been done to death and I always pick up on it now :) other is the innocent side step off the screen, not used as much as the pant/sigh/shake head combo but still common ;). Great job overall tho

I did get that it was a reference to alien song but only because you gave a clue, then it was the first song on the tape. I didn't get what you were saying until I played it twice though. It's obviously an "animators" inside joke. Then of course the way the boy reacted in fear when playing the song, and his stepping of the "stage" so he doesn't get hit (by a disco ball). However, there's no visual cue to the alien song animation. There's no picture in a frame or footage on a TV. The song on the tape is just a song on the tape. When the teddy bear drops, though it's very nicely textured and animated, it has no apparent meaning unless you know the other animation, and still, it's a stretch.

With that said, I think you animation is really, really good. I think you have very strong sense of character and are believable. The ball is thrown into the room first, out of no where, then you see the boy. It's great. Love the way the boy fakes the ball on the throw. Very much in character, very boy-ish. The ball doesn't return directly and I like that he takes ball with him before he leaves. Somehow, it shows an endearment for the ball. (not sure why)

I think it only falls apart when you start making reference to other "material" that is not directly from you. Like, why is he so scared to turn on the tape? Not that the animation isn't good, but the reference to getting hit by a disco balls is not strongly represented in your script.

it's understandable that this all occurred as you said, because you had one Idea that lead to another, and another and before you know it. Bam! a short but serendipity can make a script fragmented.

If you write your own script would have avoided the arbitrary joke to copyright meter. Again, it just "drops" out of no where.

Ok. That's all the "why's" . Lip synch was great. I'm very much look forward to more great character work from you.

Yeah....that's what I'm referring to.

a lot can be said with body language, but it's also the little things, especially the eyes that really let us see what the character is feeling.

Instead of a pant/sigh/shake it could be pant/eyes searching and looking/then returning to the previous state.

I thought the entire thing was brilliant, I loved the timing, animation and the alien reference was classic. Don't listen to anyone who says that paying hommage to something makes your piece weak or takes away from it. Also, I love the kid; he has a tonne of personality, pure perfection.

Alonzo that was a great feedback, thanks man! :)
I agree that the weakest point (and my worst nightmare) in this short is its story. I mean i was hesitating even show it to my mother untill yesterday, and i had to explain a lot to her, in order to understand whats going on. So it is a movie made for 3D animators to watch, not the general public, and thats not the best way to go.
It tought me that i have to pay much more attention to script in the future. But i guess i'm satisfied at this point, that it is not bad enough to hurt the animation.

Again thanks to everyone who has responded so far. My self confidence is getting back to normal levels now thanks to you guys! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Excellent Work!

Thats top notch.

Only critique I have is to put some different camera placements in there, so you can cut it up a little. A wider establishing shot of him playing ball w/ the wall. Wider shot of him dancing.

Other than that, beautiful work! Wish I had the time/talent to do half of that.

I was a bit confused by the story.

I've seen the 'Alien Song' short, but it didn't occur to me that he was scared a disco ball would fall on him, nor did I make the connection when the teddy bear fell at the end.

I was mostly just confused the whole way through.

Otherwise, the animation is wonderful, very fluid and expressive. Good job.

 realy nice short.Love the animation and the character. As for the script...i have to say that i have never done a short film for my own because i can't find an intresting story line with a start and an end.So i quess it's ok.A stronger visual reference to the Alien movie would have made it stronger.I'm sure that this 'script problem' is a problem in general for people that work alone. Are you in a studio now?

Ahahaha that's great fun :scream:

It can be polished a lot more, animation and lighting and all the things people have mentioned already, maybe for your next short invest more effort in the technical side of things? But as it is, it's a pretty damn nice funny story :)

As for your question, i'm on the road, job hunting once again. But not in Greece this time :)

Gaggle: Yes it could be polished a lot more, even though i've redone some parts from scratch 2 times, but i've spended my time already on this one. I'm sure i will do much better on the next one, probably during the summer period while i wait for some phonecalls. :D

As I said before and say now again (after watching it 5 more times) I love it. So much actually that I would like to feature it on my new site dedicated to 3D animation. I am a true beginner as I have never made a model but will be trying my hardest to get into the 3D life.

In the meantime, I thought that I would offer the fellow animators a place to have their animations. Hey, a mirror link is always good.

So, with your permission I would like to feature "The Tape" to be the featured flik on my new site. (should be up in a couple of days).

ENL Studios (http://www.enlstudios.com)

As for other animations, I will be visiting CG Talk daily and will be picking out other animations as well to feature and host.

Happy animating guys!!! and wish me luck!
