Hey all! I've decided to do a living room environment to work on shadows and lighting. Please C & C my work, thats the only way I'll learn. I would like to put windows in the scene and have sunlight pass through, if anyone knows of a good tutorial please let me know, I'd really appriciate it. Also a good glass shader, because I don't care for the barn doors. Thanks guys, I'll keep you posted

I'm working on a WIP similar to your, so maybe i can tell you about the things i've learn here
Think about texturing and lighting later, when the room modelling is finished, now focus on what furnitures you want to put into the room, model 'em all and once you got the main idea done, work on basic lighting, then texturize and add details in the end

Also, what are you working on?
Which program do you use? I can help only if that's 3D Studio Max :o(

Bye, check my SubWay Bedroom on my signature and read what other people told me about furniture design, you may find those suggestions useful

Keep working on it man!

I've added a few more peices of furniture and some lights to create a little ambiance. Anyway it's the light that I'm trying to learn please comment

I'd really like to know if anyone would know how to light up a scene like this. What types of lights to use and where to place them. I would like the lamp in the middle to light up the scene and to add shadows, and I don't know what to use. I've placed a wooden floor and it seems to be too bright at time when I use the ambient light in maya. I Need help!!

Too bad you use Maya, i can't help much in this... too bad...

anyway, if brightness bother you, adjust the brightness/contrast using a Photoshop or something like that
I'd go for a parquet or a moquette in a room like that
Make the furnitures a bit more complex, just a bit, not too much
and smooth the edges, that's a rule you must follow, i think
I do and i'm happy with it, stuff without smooth edges are too flat and unreal

So you want a night environment with the light turned on?

here's an updated scene, I've added a bar that I'm gonna add more detail to, moved some things around, but I believe I'm still having trouble with the lighting and the shadows.

No shadows?
All objects seems like they're floating in the air
You definitely need shadows and make those furnitures a bit more complex

Try to draw your own texture to fit the furnitures, there are lots of decorative fonts you can use to to some border on those wierd looking furnitured in the background :o)

I think is is way over-lit. Maybe lower the spec of the floor a bit.

I don't know what everything is called in Maya, but in Max they would be called omni's, anyway, maybe add some with a negative multiplier under the tables and chairs to help take some light away and to strengthen the shadows a bit.
