View Full Version : Poly Modelling : General rules for polygon distribution

I am trying to figure out what would be the best polygon distribution to a bat wing I'm modeling (about to). And so I thought there might be a rule of thumb to follow, maybe even a tutorial on this.
I'm talking about the orientation of the columns and rows of the polygons of a mesh.

I believe the ideal mesh would have squares as opposed to rectangles, triangles, etc.
This being said, what if I have rectangles in my mesh? Would that be a problem when doing the UVW Unwrapping?

Thanks in advance for any tips and advice,

No.

Quads deform better, Tris can get ugly and challenge your smoothing. When parametrizing a model we must also consider how it will deform when animated... are these wings going to fold up into a neat lil package? Or will they just need to flap nicely? It's your life..

I think you already know what to do or you would have not had the smarts to ask. So kick arse and so us your progress!

Thank you Ls3D :)

I'll kick some arse then ;) (or I'll try anyway)

Ok, here is what I thought would be a good polygons distribution with deformation for folding of the wing in mind, check the image here.
The problem I have just now is that when I extruded the wing it didn't create an end-cap :( I couldn't find a check-box for this. However I found the "Cap Holes Modifier" :) It did the job, but it looks as if though it made one big polygon (cap) for the side where the cap was missing. This means that now only one side of the wing has the "carefully distributed polys". Wouldn't this be a problem when animating it? I mean, wouldn't this prevent the wing from folding correctly?

By the way, I will move that little hook on the wing a bit higher, right where the center of the radial mesh is.
Thanks in advance guys,

Douh!!!
Why didn't I see it before?!
I can always duplicate my mesh and use the second one as the cap I need, this should work, right?

It worked!! :)

In sub-obj level, I chose all the polys making one side of the wing, then I duplicated them by shift-dragging (chose copy as element). Then once I arranged the new side I flipped its normals, and in vertex mode I welded those vertices that were intersecting with the ones from the original.

Thanks for your vote of confidence Ls3D ;)
