With Hollywood running short on ideas, Paramount greenlit a computer animated movie based on the classic trippy 80’s cartoon series The Smurfs (Truth is that the Smurfs are actually 50 years old, having first appeared in comic strips).

That looks like it should, so far. I'm anxious to see this film.

Sweet. It'd be neat to see them on the big screen (didn't they have a movie awhile back -= Pee-Wee shouldn't smurf ...not the name, a line from it). I think it was Smurfs and the Magic Flute. Anyway, this one looks cool and the Smurfs are cutsie enough that they translate well into 3D.

It's also been discovered that the word "smurf" is an excellent substitute for profanity in the work place. Or anywhere, for that matter! What the smurf?

Hey, i found this link.

That page contains basicly the same information but they have the movie from wich those stills were taken. The last 10 seconds give a brief glimps at the animation process.
Enjoy :)

Is it? I was under the impression that th original intention was for it to be released to coincide with the 50th anniversary, but that it was pushed back to a 2010 release instead.

Would make sense. Voice actors haven't even been announced, which probably would've happened already with a property this high profile.

Very well known in the US. In the 80's they were on every Saturday morning, then in the early 90's on every afternoon, at least where I live in Philadelphia.

Teyon mentioned The Smurfs and The Magic Flute. Good movie, but in the English version they got the voices all screwed up, they sounded terrible.

I think they need to look more extreme. Maybe make them photorealistic. I hope they make some pop culture references and do dance numbers. Holy geez that would be awesome!

pleeeeease no pop culture reference and rap song pleeeeease! they just screwed Asterix and the vikings with crap like that... just need a good authentic story! keep classics classic!

The 80' tv series was awfull if compared with the books and first movie. La Flute a Six Shtroumpfs was really enjoyable, especially music. Peyo was great!

I think part of the problem with doing films or shows like this is that the cartoons we all loved as kids are never actually as good as we thought they were back then. So some things have to be changed
