hmm - what is with a planar and a cylindric UVmap? I think it was enough for a blade :)
there is a fbx format at kaydara or use obj

yeah, why not just select the faces on either side and do a planar mapping on them? or select the faces of one side/half and do a planar mapping based on the camera view,
select one half of the faces and go to edit polygons--->texture--->planar mapping select the little square next to it to open the planar projection options dialogue, under the mapping direction options ,tick next to camera, make sure your camera view is set properly, so its looking directly at the blade from either side and hit "project"
then go to window----> uv texture editor, and in the texture editor window, with the faces still selected go to polygons--->layout uvs and open up the "layout uvs ..dialogue" as you did with the planar mapping, and change the options as needed (they're pretty easy to figure out if youre not familiar), then hit layout uvs....
then all you have to do is take a uv snapshot , so with the faces still selected go to, polygons--->uv snapshot, set the output options and hit ok....
open your map in photoshop or whatever and flip it horizontally to use for the other side too, just remember to do another planar mapping on the other faces
and as swag said try the fbx format ,it has worked great for me so far, you can get it here:

hope that helped,
