View Full Version : Question: Weird flipping when switching from IK/FK - 3DsMAX

This isn't really a problem, just a question i got (although it would be great if i could correct it).
I use the IK/FK switch setup where you got 3 identical bone chains, one working with IK, one working with FK and the last constrained on the other two.

But i'm sure you know all that. My question is this:

When i actually switch from one state to the other, meaning when the switch is in between values, the bones twist around weirdly out of place and break the chain.
They get back in place in the final value with no problems and the setup is fully operational, but i was just wondering why does it do that even though the IK/FK Chains are exactly aligned (meaning in the same default position).

I would like to know why, cause the way it is now i can't transition from one state to the other in a long set of frames. I can do it from one frame to the other with no problem, but any more than that and the twisting and breaking of the chain is apparent.

Any ideas where i got it wrong?

EDIT: oh i'm sorry, i forgot to mention this is in 3DsMAX.

I'm not a MAX user but this definitely seems to be a problem with the way you set it up. I've never seen any such setup that breaks in between. Double check the rotation axes and best is to make sure that you build the switch from the scratch by making fk ik versions from the same joints duplicated twice. This way you'll know that the joint rotations/axes are the same for all the joints.

Sorry that I can't really help you in a better manner.

Cheers

Well... you're definatly right, though i can't understand where i went wrong. ALL of my FK/IK seem to have this flaw and i'm trying to understand which part am i doing wrong.

Can some Max users with experience on that specific setup help out?
