---------------------------LATEST UPDATE-------------------------------
alright we are on the final stretch of the war. I'm posting a render of the winning pose really fast. This is pretty close to being finished although if I have time after I work on the beauty render I will work on this some more. I will most likely spend 30 more minutes or so on the winning pose before I send it in (I also plan on having a border around my images so it looks nice and presentable, etc, etc. Not sure what color I will use for the background yet. I will have his helm open for the beauty render. Tired, must sleep.

Worked on the face. No spec map yet. The face isn't finished yet but getting there. Off to work now! I will most likely have my finished pictures posted tomorrow evening sometime. I will then have a little less than a day to polish and/or make changes. I will fix the seams when I'm finished with texturing.

While deciding on how I wanted to handle the rest of his texture in the back of my mind I finished his pedestal. Will still need some tweaking but at least most of it is finished.

Worked some on the textures. I have not worked on the spec map yet so right now I have it as a flat constant around the entire model to help show the normal maps. I have not really worked on the pants or the red cloth yet. I plan on hopefully having all of the textures finished by Wed. I will fix the seams later on. I'm also including a WIP of the winning pose I'm thinking about. It still needs polish obviously. I originally had something a little more morbid (there were some hands attached to buried bodies under the ground) in addition to a small half buried gear. After talking with Heavyness I decided it was probably best to keep it more simple and so I enlarged the gear and had that be partly buried with him standing on it. Plus I imagine it makes the machines look larger/more menacing (before he defeated them all ;)). I plan on touching up the base a bit.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To make things more organized old images I post on this thread will be turned into links on the appropriate post.

Here we go again. Last time I finished, this time I plan on making the top 50. I have a few ideas floating around in my head. My character will most likely be:

Name: Madrigal
Class: Invoker
Artifact Weapon: Earth/Rock

I will work on some concepts and post them sometime in the near future. Best of luck to everyone in the contest. We must CRUSH the other forums!

ok, after many sketches I finally decided on what I want. I'm not adding a ton of detail into the concept so it tricks me into modeling a little more free when I get to that stage. I plan on having lots of detail for this guy. The colors I put down are not set in stone. Just something to get me thinking. I'm also going to redesign his stave so it is a little more angular and matches with the character a little more. I don't have a name yet but I do have a good idea of what his story is (I will post it when I find a name). He is basically a Invoker and can control Earth/Rock. He has sand coming out of his eyes, nose, mouth, and parts of his armor.

FistofGod, you did a robot for 3dtotal last time right? The highpoly was ace! Great design.

I like your new dude alot, very odd design. But it would be nice to see some of the shapes put into its extremes. Clothing hanging loose in the wind, the horns on the helmet being just a bit larger and so forth. Some more of the good stuff! ;)

Here is a update. There isn't any detail yet but I have some VERY basic geometry thrown in so I can get an idea of how is armor will sit. I'm going to make his chest come out a little more and his forearms be a little bigger.

Alright guys. It has been awhile since I have updated but don't worry as I'm still fighting! Last weekend was mainly spent trying to figure out where I wanted to take him as far as his armor designs go and experimenting with some things in zbrush. Here are the latest screenshots. I started adding some detail to parts of the torso and mainly the hand area. I plan on spending more time on the glove and straps down by the hand as they still need work and are not finished. I'm also going to enlarge the straps for his torso as they are kind of small at the moment. More updates coming later...

alright, here is the basic idea of his head that will be inside his helm. There are parts of flesh rotting off and the inside of his skull is filled with dirt/sand/earth (as is most of the other parts of his body). The dirt will also appear to be spreading across to other areas of his body (including armor) like a cancer. This will be more clear when I finally post the story. Still needs work obviously. Will post another wip later on today with his helm I'm working on.

here is the basic helm modeled with no details. Right now I'm mainly planning on how it opens. I like the idea of the sides opening and the top part sliding forward and then turning backward. This way the top section kind of locks everything together when the helm is closed. There will not be any holes for eyes. Will add more detail later. I also am including a body shot. I still have a ton of detail to add. After I add more detail to the armor I'm going to add the dirt/sand detail to it all. I plan on finishing up the high res model in about a week.

Thanks Albert, originally I wanted to add more complex details/designs on the armor but I was spending too much time trying to come up with something original. I was actually planning on telling a basic story with some of the details, perhaps DWI and DWII but the idea fell through. I figure once I start adding dirt built up on the armor it will look nice. :)

Alright, here are the final WIPS for today. I couldn't finish the helm as I wasn't feeling well and had to rest up. The sides of the helm will end up having hinges as right now they just kind of float. I will most likely end up spending a little more time on the head tomorrow to refine it more and to add some slight detail in other areas. I will then move on to some other parts of the body, and will then move onto the helm later on. I usually try and avoid adding too much detail to one area right away. In these screenshots you can kind of see the effect I'm going for with the dirt/earth kind of spreading out. I plan on having more inside of the helmet to help show that most of the inner helmet is covered and it is starting to grow on the outside from the holes on the front of the helm.

Hehe, the idea of being able to open up the helmet and seeing that ugly face is great idea. You got a pretty unique concept going on here. Really wierd shapes on the armor. I dig it!

My only crit so far is that the silhouette of the character he looks pretty "flat", i'd imaging a little while with transpose master could improve the overall impression of your character alot.

Perhaps already answered, but what was your workflow when creating those symbols and stuff on the armor? Was it built in zbrush?
I did similiar stuff with retopology, and projected them over with zproject brush. But yours are so precise and a part of the frame. Please share:scream:

FistOfGod
03-11-2008, 10:04 PM
Thanks! I may alter the proportions slightly but we will see. I usually change things when working on the high poly for a better look if my original concept is not full of detail. I also think that if I pose him right he can look pretty cool as is. When creating the silhouette my main concern was the helm actually and I kind of like the idea of it being the main feature standing out.

I created the details on the armor by using a combination of selection masks, deformations, and just doing it by hand for some of the details. The downside to doing it this way is that your mesh has to be very, very dense when sculpting in the details.

Hello everyone,

I worked on the arms along with a few other areas. I plan on adding more detail and wrinkles to the arms right after posting this. I decided to remove the forearm armor as I don't want to have too much armor on him. I also decided not to have the cloth on his arms hang off of him as much so his arms look thinner, and longer.

DDS: Thanks! Your entry is also one of my favorites. :)

Brashen: This is a edit, as for some reason I didn't see your post before. When I start texturing it should be easier to see what is what on the head. The head is not finished yet as some parts were really rushed and I need to polish it some. That will most likely come after most of the model is complete. Thanks for replying!

Madshooter: Thank you!

Samar: Thanks! I have around 20 or so subtools and the total poly count for everything at the moment is around 79 million. I'm guessing when I'm finished everything will be around 100-120 million. I can actually cut some of the suvdivisions down on some of the subtools later on if I want. I just wanted to get nice crisp details with lots of geometry so if/when I cut them down eventually they will still look good. It is safe to say I will be rendering the ambient occlusion maps and normal maps in sections. lol

I'm still deciding which part to move on to. It will either be the back of the torso for detail or to finish up the legs. Right now I'm leaning toward the legs as there are some proportion issues that need to be fixed. After that I will probably work on the inner cloth under his torso armor. I have not decided how long it should be in the back yet so I'm kind of holding off on that while I think about it.

You're sculpt is exellent. I also think your silhouette is just fine in your joice to keep the helmet the centerpiece of your design. Too often, we artists add clutter for the purpose of keeping the silhouette busy. The only thing I'm worried about is all that fine detail you've been spending your time sculpting, like the stitching and the maggots, will get lost in the 2048 textures. Also consider you may need to make some of the finer details bolder because once all the textures are applied some of it may get lost.

FistOfGod
03-14-2008, 12:35 AM
RaresHalmagean: Yea, you are right in that the finer details will not show up well in the 2048 normal map. I am mainly doing it for practice modeling. Once I have the entire model to a certain level of detail I will most likely go through and exagerate certain parts a little more to make them more obvious. Thanks for posting!

Thanks everyone! It has been a week since my last post. Lots of crazy stuff going on.

Here are more screenshots. I didn't get much done this weekend because I was helping my sister move. The high res model is more or less finished right now. Next up is the weapon, which won't take long. I'm also about 1/3 finished with the low poly as I jumped to it while thinking of how to handle areas of his face and working on some normal map tests. I will post the low poly screenshots soon. He will be using a spear/staff combo weapon. I threw some color on the face in zbrush to help show you guys what is going on with the sand spreading out over his face/body like a cancer. The color I put on looks kind of crappy but I will work on that when it is time to texture. :) Right now I'm still deciding on what color to make his exposed muscle/skin. I will add holes to the straps on the torso during texturing as I didn't want to add any more polys to that subtool and it is easy to do in texturing anyway. I'm really tired and it is time for bed!

Hey everyone. Here is the high res weapon. Doesn't have as much detail as some of the other areas but it will be pretty small so no need to take forever on it. this is about 2.5 hrs of work. Attached to the weapon is the magical rock/earth artifact which is the source of his power and curse. Time to start pumping out the low poly model. I should be finished with it tomorrow night after work and will post some screenshots of it then. His weapon right now is very long too, as I don't want people to think he is mainly a close range fighter (the weapon is around 1.5 times taller than him).

Hello everyone. Here is the finished low poly model and weapon. These are screenshots of the ambient occlusion map on the model. I will post screenshots of the wireframe and nm tomorrow as I'm too tired to take the screenshots and post them right now. There are some errors in the maps I will fix during texturing. Right now the mesh comes in at about 9026 as I noticed areas I needed to add some triangles to during the baking. Cutting 26 tris out it easy and I will bring it below 9k sometime between now and the deadline. I baked everything to a 4096 map and this is the res I will be working with. The screenshots I am posting will always be 2048 though. If I have time before the deadline I'm going to add some detail to areas of the high res model as well. I can do all of that later though. Now it is time to breath a sigh of relief because the hard part is over. Can kind of relax during texturing.

ok, feedback time! :) I'm posting some VERY basic color tests for the different areas of his armor (technically the metal parts don't really have colors yet as the saturation is very low. I'm more concerned with how dark the metal will be at this moment). I have my particular favorites but I will see what everyone else likes. A is pretty much the cgtalk colors exactly. The other screenshots show some minor color changes to different areas as I decided since I have the logo on the front of his armor I don't have to follow the colors exactly. I like the idea of having all of the straps be the same color but if they are all red "E" I feel that it seems like a little too much red. Another option is to just have the straps on his arms and hands be red and the other straps can have more of a traditional leather look. I have not added any basic colors to the neck head yet as I'm more concerned about his armor at the moment. Some of the screenshots show a more lighter version of the armor. I figure the designs will stand out more when I start adding detail. The last screenshot from the rear is just so you guys can see how things look from the back. I'm thinking the designs on his armor will be the darker cgtalk color but we will see. I'm also posting a screenshot of the wireframe. I will post screenshots of the normal map and finally post the background story tonight or tomorrow. Later!

Looking great so far. Tough choices on color! I don't have a clear favorite so I'll just talk about some of the differences: 'A' may be the "official" red, but it's too intense for this character. But you knew that, so you only tried it out the first time and then wisely ditched it for a more subdued red. You might also want to fool around with a red that's more saturated but darker, a darker shade the red in A.

I also agree with you that 'E' is too much red. There's no real reason all the ties have to be the same color.

The problem I'm having in choosing is that the white armor just feels too light to me, so that only leaves B. B is okay, but there's no contrast between the ties and the armor on the legs & torso, which makes that area less interesting than on the others. What about B with black ties wherever the ties show up against metal? Alternately, you've only tried 2 metal colors... How would D look with black metal?

Anyhow, looking really nice so far. My favorite part of all is the intricately-designed scroll-work on the leg plates. Such a nice design! Anyhow, good luck with choosing!

Very good points Michael. Personally, I thought C, D, and E had a color that was too light as well but I wanted to see what the reaction was of other artists. Here are some more screenshots for everyone to consider based off of what you said, and me combining some ideas. One of the screenshots(H) has a metal not as light or dark as the original screenshots. I might go a little darker (between G and H) as I plan on having dust/dirt on him and it will show up better if the armor is a touch darker I feel. G is a tad too dark but with some color thrown on the smaller designs in the armor it will help it pop a little. Right now I'm kind of leaning toward H. I is a screenshot of when I was playing around with more brown leather straps, which I don't like at all. I figure it is good to see what you all think though.

I spent a little time roughing out one of the pose ideas I had for the winning pose. Still needs polish (if I even use this one). I want to have his hand closed into a fist with some sand falling out of it. There will also be a few bodies and gears on the ground. :PI will probably have his helm open as well.

pose looks badass. I like the idea of him throwing some sand with his hand.

Can't wait to see everything together!

Except that the pose on his right arm looks a bit lame, its a super cool pose. (the hand pose is good, but some variation in how the fingers are bent would improve alot)

It might be a bit difficult to fit onto the 1000px image thought, without keeping him rather small. So I hope you make some tasty close-ups for the beauty image, so I can see how all the details work out!

Thanks for replying guys. As for his pose I plan on having his hand into a fist with some dirt coming out. I have not worked at all on the fingers yet. Right now the fingers on his other hand are not gripping the weapon yet either. Will post more wips sometime in the near future!

While deciding on how I wanted to handle the rest of his texture in the back of my mind I finished his pedestal. Will still need some tweaking but at least most of it is finished.

For the winning pose I will actually have his helmet open. The screenshots I have posted does have it closed right now. I'm waiting until I nail down the pose (which will be today). I will actually have his helm closed for some of the shots I place on the beauty render page.

I need to sleep now. Sooooo tired.

Worked on the face. No spec map yet. The face isn't finished yet but getting there. Off to work now! I will most likely have my finished pictures posted tomorrow evening sometime. I will then have a little less than a day to polish and/or make changes. I will fix the seams when I'm finished with texturing.

alright we are on the final stretch of the war.
