View Full Version : First ever self portrait
MikkoK 05-01-2003, 06:50 PM Something I've never managed to try before. A self portrait.
I had some problems with lighting changing while doing this pic. I was using a mirror which apparently made things look wider in some sense too.
PS7, using one brush from default natural brushes library.
C&C!
And yeah, my face looks like a box so don't you remind me! ;)

Hey man, that looks really good! It gives me kind of a painted feeling. Though he looks a bit expressionless. I think it's in the eyes, and also the way you put his mouth.
Maybe it's an idea to work out some more shadow effects on the sweater, or put some stiches in the sweater.
GOod work:applause:

Thanks!
Yeah, the t-shirt I wore could use some work. In real life, it's my crappiest shirt anyway ;)
The problem was that when I started painting, the light was coming to my shirt from the window in front of me (so it was lit in the mirror reflection). I later continued in the evening when most of the light was coming from a lamp behind me so it was impossible to render the shirt realistically without painting from imagination. I don't often use references, but this time I wanted to paint only what I saw.
I didn't pose for this at all so that's the biggest reason for lack of expression. While I'm certainly recognizable, the pic doesn't quite capture my spirit like a great portrait should do.
More crits please!

These stages show how I painted it.

Yeah i see what you mean now. Really nice work :wip:
It's very hard getting a good expression, so don't worry. Hmm, come'on people, give some more comments here. Am I the only one here?

It's cool. It could be a little sharper though.
If you are working with natural light you are best either using your imagination to compensate or waiting till you have similar lighting again before continuing work.
Hehe... you look so serious in the pic.

Thanx guys!
linzi: Yeah, it could be sharper. You're right with the lighting too.
Now that I look at it, the distance between the eyes seems too long. It's probably the small distortion that the mirror did. I painted in daylight so I ended up exaggerating the skin tones a lot. I like the result, considering that I've never really done anything like this before. I try to paint more from life, because it seems to be the best way to learn.
More C&C! :)
Not Bad at all. Self Portraits are one of the hardest things to paint.
The only thing that bugs me are the head phones.
They seem a little cartoony compared to everything else.
The perspective may be alittle off on them as well.
Other than that it is looking good.

Thanks Rey!
The headphones are pretty flat, you're right about it. I shouldn't have left them that way.
The perspective should be correct 'cause it's pretty much what I saw in the mirror. If you ask me though, it looks like the right side should be more behind the head.
