I've got a problem :
I made a scene in 3ds max 5.1 with a lot of particles (all PArray's)
In one part there's a screw that rotates in the water so the water will go up allong the screw (i hope you guys can imagine this ;) )
Now the problem is that the particles that I use to animate the water along the screw are sometimes disappearing 1 or 2 frames all together and after that they come back just like nothing happend :hmm:
I use a PArray(metaparticles) with a cilindrical deflector (udeflector). I've searched a f***ing lot, but I can't find any error in the scene. So I hope you guys can help me out!

See allso this movie (the flashing particles are the problem)

oh and don't say anything about the lightning, it sucks :)

Make sure you uncheck "one connected blob" in the metaparticles properties and that the particle life is long enough, and change the green stuff ;)

Why shouldn't I use 'one connected blob' ? It saves polygons doesn't it ? (particle life is long enough btw, they all disappear at once, so allso the ones that just spawned)
For this project I have a polygon max. of 40000......

Do you have any concrete suggestions for the green stuff ? (these are normal particles btw)

Metaparticles form bigger blobs when close to other metaparticles, but when they are to far apart they form multiple blobs, when you check the "one connected blob" option max will look which of the particle system's blobs is the biggest and doesnt render the others, so if a particle is not in that blob it disappears and shows up again when it connects to the big blob. It does indeed save polygons simple because it lets particles disappear which is what you do not want, so it's not a very effective way to save polygons, you can better just lower the coarseness of the particles to save poly's.

For the green stuff i recommend you to not make it all one solid color, that makes it look very unnatural.

Hope that helps...

thanks for the clear explanation ! I'm now rendering the animation again to see if it works.

About the green particles: Is it possible to texture or 'color' them 'by particle' ? I mean that I give one particle a light green color and an other one a bit more dark green color ?
