neo-nora's uber generic background story:
(i wrote this right now, i know it sucks but its just for fun :) )

nora was a renowned bounty hunter in the providence of Fora of the Alobel empire, when a plot to kill the ancients of the Alobel was unveiled nora was sent to slain the rebels, not knowing that the rebels had stolen a spell to seal a persons magic power from the ancients nora was ambushed and sealed by a eternal darkness spell, her days as a bounty hunter were over.
retired.. alone she started to grow eerie inside and the hate was overwhelming, she pledged that one day she will vanquish all evil in the known land. blablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablabla.
summoned by the ancients nora was awarded a weapon capable of the speed of air and the strength of thunder also transmitting her the power to sense a foes electrical conductivity allowing her to see again :D.

Yeah, thats lookin good.

Pose-wise, try dropping his head and have it stick out forward like a good-ol velociraptor. It'll have more of that reptilian feel.

And how about some back spines/fins ?

and off course as always everything is subject to change :scream:

I've started making the armor bases that im going to take into zbrush, actually i think this is all of the armor for the character, again i changed the design now is more of a striped down ruined armor pierced and tangled by branches or more less vines, i think of this character like a dead wyrm controlled by a spirit living inside the artifact using the wyrm as an avatar, the spirit is the one who can control vegetation and is using it to make this beast a puppet, so now i got to do the spirit which i have a cool idea how its going to be but maybe i should get cracking with the artifact hu...

hey there. to be honest i think this one http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i60/Rurufus/nora4dw3_02-1.jpg works best. at least in my opinion it looks cooler. Great start so far keep it up. be careful about any gadjets and what not. not sure exactly what is or isnt allowed. i supposed machines are out as it says.

Firerbert

I agree ReK0. Need to be SUPER careful with gadgets. The knee piece looks very mechanical at first glance. If it was bolts and hinges, I could see it being okay. Even though the theme is set in the distant distant distant distant distant distant distant distant future, they have no electricity. Although I'm sure a piece like that could be made without electricty, it needs to really look like it's non-electric to be safe. You don't want to be DQd because the initial reaction to something is that it's too high tech. Espeically after you spend hours and hours of work on it.

thx Rek0, i did like that one but it seemed to generic of a dragon to me and i wanna do it darker than that and about the machines im not shure about broken machines, thats kind of the concept behing the knee parts and i wanna achieve the broken machine effect with the vines and over all deterioration that im going to sculpt and paint so im gonna check that out but i think its ok.

yes, right now it looks very clean but hopefully next time you see it will look like junk from thousands of years ago, but even if my idea is not allowed its not very hard just to change the part but as i said hopefully the final piece is gonna be way darker and creepy that it looks right now.

hi guys, i guess its time to update.. i changed my mind yet again.. in such an indecisive bastard... i fell out of love with the dragon character after seeing how the claws looked in her, i just thought it was overkill considering SHES A DRAGON

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i60/Rurufus/231241351231231.jpg

so im left with the choice of either keep going with the dragon concept or design another character.
i decided to go another route but since we have like 17 days im kitbashing the dragons armor and not go for the super epic character, the "neo-nora" character is a blind dark elf stalker with artifact thunder claws, she is able to see thanks to the artifact detecting a foe's electric conductivity, shes screwed against vegetation.

thank you :) , i'll be exporting the hiress parts from zbrush and crunch it in something called polygon cruncher just so i can build the low poly ontop of that, when the low poly is complete im going to use xNormal to transfer the maps from a uncrunched version of the hi polys to the low poly mesh  but since i dont have that much detail i might just trasfer the maps within maya from a crunched hiress and use CrazyBump for other detais on the textures.

no prob man, polygon cruncher also comes with something called 3d browser for 3d users by mootools and thats what im using but ill like to point out that it has failed me several times, seems that it has a limit or might just be my computer but when i try to crunch more than one million polys it says "bad file extention" so hopefully theres better products out there

heres my sad attempt at texturing :arteest: I've just started but all ready the skin, boots and armor pieces don't convince me plus i don't think red is a good color for denim pants, color is easily changeable tho.
the normal map of the armor pieces is a little weird too, i made it from mixing the texture and various shades of gray depending of the height i wanted but i couldn't get it right.. since the latest update CrazyBump has been really Really slow for me :banghead:.
i also have some tris left that i will use for more hair.

i'll be hammering it out more tomorrow, any advice would be Very appreciated :wavey:.

Don't sell yourself short man! What you've done so far is good. Your UV layout looks nice and clean. Have you used ZMapper for your normal map? Don't getting crazy with other plug-ins if you're not comfortable with them at this stage in the competition. Use what you know will work to your advantage. If the normal maps are giving you issues, you may want to consider doing just some standard bumping in Projection Master/Photoshop instead since your UVs look solid.

Necronomiden
04-06-2008, 01:33 AM
thx Firerbert :scream:, i tried to generate the normal maps with a software called xNormal that i thought would be the best way to transfer my detail from the hipoly to the low poly but i was getting a lot of tracing errors in the face.. it didn't make sense! and i ended up just importing the hi poly and transferring the maps within maya piece by piece and that worked great, didn't even need to crunch the hi poly, the upper body went for 250k or so, quads of course
so what you said about sticking to what you know is so true.
im satisfied with the things i transfer in maya and i'll be fixing the armor normals that i generated from the textures i painted in photoshop alittle later when when my textures are better

you can see here the armor pieces normals is to strong

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i60/Rurufus/armornormal3213412341.jpg

here you can see the contrast between the ones generated in maya and the ones generated with the textures in CrazyBump

:applause: ah the joy of relief from so much stress! that's gotta feel good eh? so, my biggest concern is the face. If the her eyes and mouth are going to be sewn shut, then there should be some sort of scaring and stress marking from the initial wounds and from them being sewn. There should also be some bruising and redness from her trying to move her mouth and eyelids. Although after years of being shut, I doubt she would try to open them, but there will always be some involuntary movement that will create these sorts of markings.

d xNormal that i thought would be the best way to transfer my detail from the hipoly to the low poly but i was getting a lot of tracing errors in the face..

Did you use cages to limit the ray distance and to control the direction?
And try to avoid 3dsmax's OBJ exporter... messes the vertex normals a lot.
Also try to scale up a bit the meshes... usually can happen some floating point accuracy errors when is radius is <=4.0
The cage should cover completely the highpoly... and better extrude it a bit more than should be to avoid tracing errors.

Btw, very good character! I like the glow on the eyes/mouth! ( well, and the models in general are awesome! )

Firerbert : it really feels good man  after so long.. it has been a great experience because we've seen each others characters develop day after day and see them turn for the better or for the worst (like my case) and i feel happy.
but for what the design is i think ishes not that bad but thats not for me to decide is it? :scream: i still wanna be in the poster .
and about the face textures i agree, the skin seems very clean now that i think about it...ill have to paint some trauma, thx man

jogshy : wow the creator of xnormal! i didn't do any of that, the first time i used it it was for a more complex character in an unmodified base mesh and everything went perfect and it was about the same scale too thats why i said it didn't make sense that i was getting tracing errors in parts as simple as the lips but i see what your saying.
just last night i downloaded the new version and this time really went and read the documentation so ill definitely be using it for all my future projects and definitely donate some dough if a get a job in games :deal: its hands down one of the best software out there the only thing that i would love to see it do is make the normals out of a photograph by it self instead of having to import different lit photos oh and better transparency support :).
and thanks alot fo the help!

medunecer : hey man thanks it makes me feel alot better, i was a little worried about the glow in the face not fitting in but it was in my head all the time that the sewings were magical so i had to do something to make them look that way. i hope you figure out how to do it in LightWave, wish i could help but don't know anything about that soft :hmm:
