Title: Fat Dragon
Name: Rory Lane Lutter
Country: USA
Software: 3ds max, Photoshop, ZBrush

I'm really starting to enjoy Zbrush.

I wanted to do a dragon with some personality, and I found that I like him better when he was a little bit fat. I liked the way it made him seem more lumbering and wobbly.

I made this model in 2 marathon 6 hour sessions from concept to final render. This render is a medium resolution z-brush export with a normal map. I used the default scanline renderer in max with a sky light for shading and several colored omni lights set to effect specular for highlight.

Cool design. More unique than most of the cg dragons that pop up. Love the face!

Thanks Guys. I'm glad you liked it. I've always had sort of an affinity for dragons. It was my number one class doodle subject.

By the Way, I recorded a timelapse of the Modeling if you're curious.

Ha Ha! I love it! I hope this gets plugged.
The video gets a little choppy at then end. This might just be my connection.

I'd love to see him in a walk / waddle cycle.

Hey there Rory.
Not noticed you about for a bit. Of course that could be me that's not been about much, but either way, what a great way for you to show up. Full of personality and wit. I really am going to have to give that Zbrush thing a go. It's certainly working well for you.

grundelboy- yeah the video codec got strange at the end but It would have taken an hour to re-render without any certainty that it wouldn't repeat the problem so I decided to leave it. I'd like to find the time to animate it. I have such a vivid image of how he'd move, I'd like to realize it.

Octostatue- Thanks, I appreciate it.

Bention- I'll take that as a complement ;).

rohanoka- Thank you so much. Yeah, I was really satisfied with how the attitude turned out on this one.

Poobles- Thanks. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Nickillus- Hey. How's it going. Yeah, after the 2D I spent a long time learning how to make games in Flash. I made several bad games, then one good one, and then I got in completely over my head attempting to make a game that was ended up just being all-together too ambitious for one intermediate programmer to complete in a reasonable time-frame. Before I knew it the GDC was practically here, and so now I must Hurry to make some 3D pieces for my portfolio in the hopes that I'll be able to find a game job. Z-Brush is great. I tried and failed to learn it a while ago. My mistake was thinking that given my experience with other 3D apps that I'd be able to transpose that knowledge. Z-Brush is too different. This time, I watched one of the Digital Tutors videos, and I got the hang of it extremely quickly. There's an initial unintuitive leap while you learn the difference between draw and edit modes, which is essentially that you must always stay in edit mode even though it starts you off in draw mode. Then the selection and navigation hotkeys are too bizarre to expect anyone to figure out on their own. After you get past those two things it's a really intuitive program, and provides a much more satisfying ratio of artistic/technical effort while working than any other 3D application I've used.

Thanks to all for your comments -Rory-

i agree with everything u said bout zbrush--- it is more artistic and totally different than every other 3d program ive seen, but worth the time figuring out because once u get passed the beginning weirdness of the program u get a very powerful feeling of control

Great character! loved the video of how you made it, any chance of a explanation or breakdown of the light rig you used. Im trying to get a decent result in max with a simple setup, so am just interested to see how you set yours up.

Thnx, great work!

Love it. If it's fully rigged, I'd love to see it as part of complete scene.

6- blue light behind and to the left of the character effecting diffuse and specular.
7,8, warm orange lights to the front light of the character effecting specular only.
9-warm orange light to the front right of the character effecting diffuse and specular.
