View Full Version : still: A robot sees the light
alphatron 05-01-2003, 12:37 PM Little image made for the XSIbase robot challenge. Only had a few days to to work on it and submit, but was a great way to learn XSI in the process. I plan on doing lots more with the robot, including working on the shading and rigging/enveloping.

The robot is inspired by the Japanese designs of the 60's. In particular the Super Robot series (called Gigantor here).

Except for the odd arm proportions, i love it! Simple and cute!:D

Thanks erilaz,
The shoulder/bicep area is the first thing I'm planning to fix.

That's a very atmospheric image, nicely done. I quite like the disproportionate arms, they contrast the huge chest quite nicely, but I think the way the torso is jointed onto the legs would look better redesigned.
Great job.

Hi Frank,
Thanks for the reply. Do you mean the pelvic area? Specifically hw the legs slot unto the pelvis, or the pelvis in general?
Thanks again

I think what Frank meant was how the legs slot into the pelvis. You can't really tell if they slot in or they're just overlayed. The legs seem to close together when they join the pelvis. Maybe if you move them more apart or try to highlight the slots if they are there.
Otherwise I love the atmosphere and the robot. Makes me want to give it a big hug :p
Keep up the good work! :buttrock:

Thanks for the suggestion teewsandy, I see what you mean! :-)
It's difficult in terms of animating a robot like this, where are are no visible joints/gears and the surface does not deform (the only things that deform are the hands and the rubbery waist). You end up with intersecting geometry a lot of the time , so you have to make compromises with how it will look in stills posed shots.
