Hey y'all!

Well I've cut together a new reel and I'm so pleased to be able to show it here to you guys. Some of the projects were completely in house so until recently couldn't be released publicly.

Most of the work was done while I was working at Yomp Studios in Melbourne; shout out to the boys there! The quality of the rendering is absolutely wicked, the reel wouldn't have looked the way it does if it wasn't for you guys.

It's reel short (lol), but sweet. Hope you like it.

Cool dude :)
Dorkiest question to ask, but I have to - what's the music? hehe

Fantastic work. Is that short with the Dinosaur available to the public yet? It looks amazing.

And seconded on the music. Love it.

Very nice! The one shot at the end seems a little random / short but the rest is really cool, great work.

ha!... what a nice bunch of familiar faces. lol. thanks guys.

the music is from a soundtrack that I had lying in my library from a couple of years back.

I'll have to throw that "dinosaur" one up on my website too I think. Officially it's the in house short we did at Yomp Studios called "The Yomp Experience". It's a self promo piece that's a little left field...

...We spent waaaay too much time and effort for it not to be shown to the public. I'll see if I can't write up the credits and post an .mov of it early next week... it's like 10 mins long though!

Awesome work Carl !

Its good to see the shiny fruits of your labours finally out in the open.

Rigging that tree must have been a nightmare.

This is really amazing stuff

Nice work, but I'm really confused as to what you did, and what sort of job you're aiming for (and even what's going on in some of the shots).

Rigging/animation?

What do you mean by VFX? Like... stuff put into live-action, or particle/dynamics work?

Hey Jim! Yeah, rigging the tree took heaps of RnD. The main trunk is all mocapped (with me in the suit too! lol); the smaller branches are then all dynamically driven.

Initially there were 4 levels of dynamics going on, with the leaves all being hair curves, all put on larger twigs that were also hair. Then they were put on bigger branches (again hair curves)... and the simulations were so nice and realistic; with the twigs being all independant of eachothers movement. But in the end it all had to be stripped out cause the simulations were taking too long and the subtleties weren't really noticable for the long distance shots. in the end there is just on level of dynamics going on in the branches ontop of the mocap.

Damn, I see what you mean Bonedaddy. It is a little ambiguous. I was hired as a generalist initally but as time went on I became the studios only Maya rigger. There is a lot of generalist/fluid fx/particle work I'm still proud of that I still wanted to put on my reel. I've found that the "specialist" jobs are still far and few between in Australia, so I'm aiming for a "rigging" position, knowing that I'll probably be doing generalist stuff too. There is a beakdown on my webite of the specifics.

I'll see if I can't put together some camtasia stuff showing off the rigs I've built, aswell as the complexity of the tree. Make the reel a lil more "rigging specific".
