Title: Cold Dark Water
Name: Fiona Meng
Country: Canada
Software: Photoshop
I started this picture last year and didn't have the guts or patience to complete it to its fullest. Alas, I think it's finally done to the point where I'm satisfied. Originally I wanted it to be Sedna, a sea goddess, but she seems to have taken the form of a fish mermaid instead. This picture took me forever, and I never thought I could learn so much from drawing a single picture. If you have any comments or suggestions I'd love to hear them!
Here's a close-up shot:

I do really like it, but the way that body goes in to fish is not the best one I think.

How so? Do you have any sujestions on how I can improve on it?

I kinda like the subtle transform, but I would like her hips be bit bigger and shaped.
I'm confused by the strong light in the back, since it doesn't give her anything...it's not light?

nice! this is even better than you last version :) I also really like how the transformation is subtle, and not a human stitched on a fish like you often see (at least to me that's what most mermaids look like). color's, details and atmosphere are all great! I'm also wondering a little about the back light?... anyway can't stop staring at the coral you did in the left under corner.. looks really impressive. :applause:

Hey, I've looked at your last version too, I really think that the light in the back was a good thing to do. I gives it much more dept to the picture and it works a lot better for the composition. Also the bubbles are very good painted, jeej:scream:.
Nybekat and Cor: About that the light from the back doesn't reflect on her. It's not bothering me. It's a realistic drawing of a vision of her world instead a photographic vision of the real world. Otherwise we all could better make photos, and since when mermaids do exist?
But I don't know what Fiona has to say about it? Maybe it would work well some light reflecting on her, but I don't think that's gonna make a lot of differents. I like it this way :p

It seams to me that you have spend a lot of time in doing all beautiful details, but the fish part of the body is like cylinder with fish skin on it. Truth is that when you look at fish from one side it does look so, but she is not a fish. But really, do not take this words hard. As I have sad, this is really beautiful work, 4* from me. It is just that this one part (fish body) looks to me like this part was not so important to you. I have such problems all the time by the way.
Keep up with great job!

Thanks! You guys really helped me out a lot! When you stare at a picture for so long you really loose perspective, thanks guys!

Beautiful work Fiona - subtle and lyrical. Love the soft coloring and her hair, very nice flow to everything.
