View Full Version : Asteroid field - test
BooTy 05-01-2003, 10:43 AM Hello,
this is a little test rendering of an asteroid field that I'm working on ...
It's not meant to be too realistic, I'm just trying to get some atmosphere (I love the cool space environments in Homeworld, Freelancer and such games :-) ) and make it good looking and I'm quite satisfied so far ... but comments are welcome :-)

I think your asteroids and rendering are completely BadA**.
One thing that's bugging me though.
I hope you don't mind me drawing on your pic, but it was hard to put into words.
You can tell that you duplicated models. At least it looks like it to me. I apologize if I am wrong.
I just thought I would mention it, because it's the first thing I noticed when I looked at your cool ass scene.

I noticed that too, and although I don't really think it's a big deal to have duplicate models like that (you should make it less obvious though), what I don't like is the shape. They appear to be a bunch of small asteroids stuck together forming these big things with holes and I just don't get how that could ever happen. Gravity does not really work that way, you know what I mean?
Aside from that, the textures and models look great.

Absolutely amazing...
Very nice environment and colors, and cool odd looking asteriods...
now let us on a ride through the asteroid belt, Yehaaa
Keep it up

I wouldn't worry to much about the shape... in my world artistic freedom is what it's all about....I personally think its cool to see how other people interpret things....I have never seen asteriods like this before and that is part of the great thing about this image.... (besides of all the other great things:-))
Just my 2 cent

DarkBane: no, they're not the same model ... look at it more closely a u'll see that the shape is different ... not much but still is ...
Zytrex: I understand what u mean but ... I don't use the "how could that happen" approach ... I just do what I think looks good, no matter how it could exist in reality ... the rocks are not meant to be sticked together ... I was trying to make them deformed and broken from impacts with other rocks and stuff ... but I wanted them to look unique and interesting ... something that u look at and say "whoa, that looks good" and u don't care about how realistic it is ... it's all about effect and about creating something original and "eyecatching" ...
PoPpiN: u get the point

correction ... the one to the right and the one far in the middle actually ARE the same model ... only rotated cuz I was too tired and sleepy to make another model (it's only a test so who cares anyway :-) ) ... the one to the left is totally different model ...

I apologize Booty.
Regardless they do look similar, but that's not the point.
I still think your picture is completely fricken cool.
I like the look of your asteroids with the holes in them. They are very stylized and cool.
When you see pictures of asteroids, you don't normally see them like yours, but I think that makes it great. First of all, originality.
Second of all, it makes you think, what strange and crazy stuff out in the depths of space collided and create such strange yet beautiful space debri.
Once again, looks great.
Sorry again.
