View Full Version : jumping, falling and walking robot
klesk33 05-01-2003, 09:02 AM Well, here I go again with more animation tests. This time I have tried to make the character roll in the air while jumping or falling.
I want to be able to move the character in all actions possible.
In the walking animation I have tried to make him a "happy robot". They are all in DIVX format.
All opinions and critiques welcome, I still have to learn a lot.

the main crit I've got here is to do with the first jump animation....
When he lands, he only lands on one foot, and, while it does give slightly, it looks like he's just jumped down off a low ledge.
With those quite spindly-looking upper legs, I think he needs more give when he lands, and maybe landing on both feet....

My Crit is on the Jump.
I agree that he needs more recoil when he lands. There needs to be some sort of "catching himself" when he lands. Moving off to the side abit and taking a few steps. That's a huge distance to go to land on one foot and not have momentum take him forward.
Also, When he does the backflip, pull his knees towards his chest. Its something that looked odd to me. I see alot of people almost curl in a ball when they go backwards. These are my thoughts.

Crit on the backflip. I've seen tons of backflips. Needs to be rotated around 90 more degrees by the time his fall is ground level (ground level of the surface that he is jumping from).
The backflip itself is usually pretty quick. Then the rest of the fall is nearly in a feet-down head-up position.

I think you have some nice starts on the animations. They all could use a bit of pushing on timing and posing though.
First, I am not sure if you are aiming for a cartoon or physically accurate animation style, but I think you are going for more cartoon.
The back flip seems to have a very linear vertical translation. It seems like when he jumps form the platform, he immediately hits the speed that he ends the jump with. Try slowing him in, taking longer fall at the top and speeding up into hitting the ground. Also, maybe try chaning his body position and pose in the middle of the jump, where he should do most of his roll. Pro divers usually do their entire rotation in the first half or less of the dive and spend the rest getting into position.
The jump seems as though he is lifted off the ground or that he is in very low gravity. Maybe try really pushing his squats on the jump and the landing and making the time he spends in the air shorter, maybe 50% shorter if you want to push it.
On the walk, the first 3 seconds look pretty solid, but he really hits his poses after that so that it doesn't seem to flow. All of his body parts come to a stop right at the apex of his steps. Overlap his arm, leg, and body motion and that should help a bit. Also try leaning him forward or backward to give him so emotion or momentum.
Overall a pretty good start. I'm eager to see the next passes.
Good luck.

to make your jump a bit more weighty: try putting a stretched out pose a few frames before the crouch so you get a nice contrast between the straight line through his body as he is just contacting the ground and the curve as he crouches down. notice the feet are pointed as he contacts the ground to get a bit moore strecth out of it and are only JUST touching the ground and the rest of the body is stretching up? that's what it is, squash and stretch you see. have a play around and see what you think, adjust the timing, the amount of squash & strecth in the poses, see what effect it gives. here's a pic to show what i mean (excuse the bad drawing!)
