Hi all,

I've been searching and reading, looking to see if there's a way to zoom on the cursor position - like in Max and Lightwave. It looks like C4D will only zoom on the center of the view.

I did come across the 'magnify' command on page 411 of the manual by doing a search for 'zoom' in the .pdf version. It allows you to hold the 'M' key then click and drag a box around the area you want to magnify. That works fine, but it changes the view port to what I think is the 'parallel' mode. When I use S,O or H to zoom back out the viewport looks whacky. I have to go to the 'Cameras' menu, select something different, even though it still shows 'Perspective,' and then go back to perspective. The only thing that seems to work is to hold down 'M' and left click in the view port on the part I want to magnify. This zooms on the cursor by 25% without causing any change in the viewport mode.

The manual also says you can use + or - keys to zoom. The minus key works for me, but not the plus. Is this a bug?

Also, I did a search in the forum for this and came across a post by Phasmatis -

"...from then on use your right mouse button on the Move view tool (1 is the shortcut key) to zoom in and out instead of the zoom view tool (2).

Is there a reason for this? I was just getting into the swing of using 1-2-3+LMB for move-zoom-rotate. It feels odd to use 1+RMB for zoom.

I'm not griping... I realize every program has some room for improvement. Just trying to see what's what. :)

BTW... I'm using 8.1 XL on a 2.4 Gig P4, Geforce4 ti4200 128mb, winXP pro.

I just thought about something.... maybe what I'm seeing as a change in view port mode is a change in focal length of the camera.

There isn't much documentation on the magnify tool. Any comments on the matter would be appreciated.

Hi pixel8or, if I understand right, a simple solution is to use:

shortcut key '2' and Left mouse click for moving camera
shortcut key '2' and Right mouse click for changing focal lenght

I don't use anything else.

P.s. + and - function correctly for me
Maybe you can check in windows>layout>command manager if the shortcut is assigned correctly

Thanks for the reply, manlio.

I'm aware of the 2 key and right/left mouse. I just think it's cnvenient to be able to set the pointer over the area I want to zoom to when I click and drag and have it zoom on that one spot.

Hmmm.... the + key is assigned to to 'Zoom In' in the command manager. Now I'm really puzzled. Will have to look some more later.

Thanks again.

also when you move or rotate in viewport it depends on which object you had focus on in the object manager....as to how you rotate/move around an object...why not just move...rotate around specific object then zoom in out from that...eg subject?

I just use the mouse wheel to move in and out.

yesterday I discovered that the arrow keys can be use to move objects around.

which is totally cool. of course everyone has probibly been doing this forever and I will be laughed at but what the hell I think its neat.

Okay, I see it... Using the Camera Tool it shows Focus/Zoom in the Coordinates Manager. When I use 'M' + LMB to drag a selection to zoom in on, it racks the focal length way up. Then when the 'O' is used to frame the object it stays at the cranked up focal length making things look compressed.

Where this works great, though, is in the orthogonal views. Focal length has no distortion effect there. It's a good way to get in tight on a few points quickly.

The + key thing must be something weird in my system. Oh well... a minor annoyance. I'm not going to worry too much about it for now.

Sorry for being so nit picky. I've been wanting to dive into a 3D program for a long time. I really get into this stuff. But I still have that problem of having expectations based on the first program I ever used. You know.... "Well, yeah, but Max works like this....."

You should have seen me when I first opened up Lightwave. Man, did that ever bake my noodle!

That's what I love about computers. It's always cool to discover little things like that.
