Last weekend I finally got around to posting my inquiry about freelance-related posts in the sub-forums, like this one. This is what I asked in the CGtalk Support Forum:
Late last year the issue of posting threads seeking freelance help came up in the C4D forum. A member did just that only to be told to use the 'jobs' board instead and his thread was closed. (I looked back just now and see that it was re-opened, but the rebuke was already delivered).
I found the policy to be disturbing and there was this discussion about it:
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthr...&highlight=jobs (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=47&t=556243&highlight=jobs)
I have read the 'usage' page and it is far from clear about this.
What is the official CGtalk policy regarding members of the forums and sub-forums posting jobs and freelance assignments in forums of their choosing?
But, after four days without a response, I emailed in to point out the posting, suggested perhaps it had been overlooked. The response was eyeopening:
We don't actively engage in users who are bringing up resolved issues. We do not allow job postings on our forums.
So you were ignoring the question? How insultingly arrogant!
Reading the 'terms-of-use' document does not resolve the issue, and I'm not sure where the resolution is posted. The 'jobs' board is ill-suited for quick-turnaround, 'let's throw something out and see what my collegues can come up with' projects, which frankly, is how I most often work. As I've said, I'm not trying to undercut the CGT revenue opportunities. If I have a studio position, or such a big project that that I need to retain long-term contract talent, I will be happy to use the jobs board. Of course, it would be nice if there was a Cinema4D section in case I was looking for help on my platform.
A more appropriate model might be for a voluntary contribution to CG Society if you used this board to find freelance help when you needed it, or find that sort of work as a supplier. There could be a 'donate' button and it could be a matter of professionalism to use it. Then the owners would be assured they'd get their money and we would have a more professionally appropriate forum where we can help eachother and have opportunities to work together.
Not being able to discuss the collabotarive possibilities of projects limits the usefullness and enjoyment factor of CG Talk for me. I am an artist by birth, but C4D/Photoshop based illustrator by profession. I come here to hang out with other professionals. Discussing working together is part of that. Or at least it should be.
We do not allow job postings on our forums.
