Last weekend I finally got around to posting my inquiry about freelance-related posts in the sub-forums, like this one. This is what I asked in the CGtalk Support Forum:

Late last year the issue of posting threads seeking freelance help came up in the C4D forum. A member did just that only to be told to use the 'jobs' board instead and his thread was closed. (I looked back just now and see that it was re-opened, but the rebuke was already delivered).

I found the policy to be disturbing and there was this discussion about it:
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthr...&highlight=jobs (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=47&t=556243&highlight=jobs)

I have read the 'usage' page and it is far from clear about this.

What is the official CGtalk policy regarding members of the forums and sub-forums posting jobs and freelance assignments in forums of their choosing?

But, after four days without a response, I emailed in to point out the posting, suggested perhaps it had been overlooked. The response was eyeopening:

We don't actively engage in users who are bringing up resolved issues. We do not allow job postings on our forums.

So you were ignoring the question? How insultingly arrogant!

Reading the 'terms-of-use' document does not resolve the issue, and I'm not sure where the resolution is posted. The 'jobs' board is ill-suited for quick-turnaround, 'let's throw something out and see what my collegues can come up with' projects, which frankly, is how I most often work. As I've said, I'm not trying to undercut the CGT revenue opportunities. If I have a studio position, or such a big project that that I need to retain long-term contract talent, I will be happy to use the jobs board. Of course, it would be nice if there was a Cinema4D section in case I was looking for help on my platform.

A more appropriate model might be for a voluntary contribution to CG Society if you used this board to find freelance help when you needed it, or find that sort of work as a supplier. There could be a 'donate' button and it could be a matter of professionalism to use it. Then the owners would be assured they'd get their money and we would have a more professionally appropriate forum where we can help eachother and have opportunities to work together.

Not being able to discuss the collabotarive possibilities of projects limits the usefullness and enjoyment factor of CG Talk for me. I am an artist by birth, but C4D/Photoshop based illustrator by profession. I come here to hang out with other professionals. Discussing working together is part of that. Or at least it should be.

We do not allow job postings on our forums.

I have picked up jobs from this very board that led to TV work and for computer games like Call of Duty 4, so it is news to me.

Hmmmm. That seems a little counter-intuitive to the idea of helpful collaboration, idea-sharing and promotion of CG.

I know people who frequent this site to see what talent is available and seek prospective free-lancers for projects, etc.

Is it at least allowed to post a link here with that official CG job offer for additional details and to answer questions?

Indeed this sounds very wrong as the other guys comment here, you know what you have to do Ernest. Either start your own small jobforum or have a jobs section on your website where the latest jobs you got to offer are posted and then you hotlink to your jobs section in your signature so we can check it regularly. That would work until CGTalk changes it's ways.. :)

Last time I needed help I just posted in this thread, "Hey, I need some help. PM me." And got quite a few responses and didn't get any flack from the mods, so not sure what's up.

May need another freelancer very soon. If it's 3D, I'm going to want a fellow C4Der. If it's 2D, I'll look elsewhere on the forum.

Not sure how else to go about it. The stuff I need is usually a one shot thing. Very short term.

Ernest: Don't you think you are blowing this out of proportions?

When did someone here limit your communication with others on projects?
When was the last time anyone complained about not beeing allowed to post a fast cry for immediate help in a project here?

What is (imo) correctly limited to the jobs forums are official job offers and requests.

What you call insulting arrogant has been made perfect clear by Salmonmoose in the thread you quote. Maybe read it again. For CINEMA 4D jobs to become listed in a more prominent position their simply need to be more of them, there are no fixed categories.

Cheers

What you call insulting arrogant has been made perfect clear by Salmonmoose in the thread you quote. Maybe read it again.

I did read it again. The entirety of Mr. Death (it was the salmon mousse)'s comments go to why there is no C4D section on the job board, not the issue of how to find freelance work/people to do freelance work.

The arrogance is deciding my inquiry wasn't worth the time to respond to, even though I point out that the question isn't addressed anywhere I can find.

When did someone here limit your communication with others on projects?
When was the last time anyone complained about not beeing allowed to post a fast cry for immediate help in a project here?

When you closed the 'medical illustration-need help' thread, telling people to use the job board instead.

When you told me last week to go to other boards to look for people to hire to help in my work rather than post here in the C4D forum.

What is (imo) correctly limited to the jobs forums are official job offers and requests.

Well that doesn't mate with the official line. I asked about posting quick freelance issues in sub-forums, was told
We do not allow job postings on our forums.
How much more clear could they be than that? Sure, I can just go ahead and mention that I need help and people will quietly email and PM me (which a number have in the last week, thanks, guys!) but then I'm violating the rules. I only learned it was a rule by reading your post, Bjorn. (And then Maxon posted looking for an employee in this forum).

My point is, I don't want to break the rules. The rules may be counter-productive to the target population, but it's not my board. It's someone else's for-profit business, I'm just hanging out here for the free coffee.

Moderators: Can this thread be a 'Sticky', please? It seems this rule is poorly understood. It would be useful to have it available at all times, should someone forget their manners and ask about working with forum-mates in the forum.

Well if it wasn't for someone needing freelance work done last year I wouldn't have been able to do Christmas at all, it was done to pure luck of me checking these forums that I found a job and a got a second job a week after the first and got myself a nice tidy some of money just before christmas, If I hadn't have found that job i'd have had no where near enough money to do Christmas, so this forum is perfect for me.

I think that maybe the signiture linking to jobs would be a good idea.

Just seems a little strange that we cannot share information like that though.

Sorry guys, this is not the place for this. CGTalk and CGSociety is not a free for all, it is owned and run by Ballistic Media who may choose to run it however they wish. You have had your answer and explanation already, if you want change then talk to them directly.

In general we allow a great deal of freedom and deviation from the rules in the C4D forum, that may be a mistake as it comes as a nasty shock when you do finally run up against them as you have done here. If you wish to complain about this you should discuss this directly with Ballistic Media staff rather than focus your arguments against the unrelated voluntary forum leader staff here.
