Hi all,

I am trying (and trying and trying.....) to get a realistic gold
material. Any hints or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Info:

Using 3D Studio Max 4.2, Vray
The model is two simple interlocked gold wedding bands
I am slightly color blind so RGB Values would be helpful
The rings are floating in nothingness. I can put anything else in the scene for reflections and cut them out later using the Alpha channel

What I know:

Gold is highly reflective so raytracing would be the best option.
What the rings Reflect is half the battle.

What I don’t know:

Shader?
Specularity?
Shininess?
Glossiness?
Blurriness?
Diffuse color?
Ambient color?

Please Help.

3ds max comes with material libraries for a good starting point. Open the 3dsmax.mat, and try the Reflection_Lake_Gold material.

You might also be able to find something useful in the free matlibs shared here:

use a hdri maps...but that might be overdoing it. does vray support them?

if it does you could prolly get some great reflections on the rings.

trinisica.com has some great images of hdri stuff...but like i said it might be too much for what you are doing.
