You're asking for a simple answer to a complex query.
You really can't just be told what the process of texturing entails and then apply that information.
The templates that you have from 2nd life are basically UV snapshots of an unwrapped 3D model.
The template shows you where to apply specific textures.
Such as arms, head, legs etc...
Typically you would create your model, apply UV coordinates, unwrap the UV's so they're layed out in 2D.
Then paint your textures.
If you've never done any of this at all, it's gonna be difficult to just gather info about it and do it.
The process is basically called texturing, maybe UV mapping but that pertains more to preperation of the unwrapped UV set.
Do a board and/or google search on texturing a human.
There's alot of tutorials, but they're typically application specific.
What 3D app are you using?
If all you want to know is how to paint the template in photoshop, then 3D tutorials are gonna be overkill.
Is that what you're asking, how to paint the textures in Photoshop only?
If you know how to use Photoshop then it should be pretty self explanatory.
You just use Photoshop's tools to either paint directly on the template, or manipulate photos as textures.
If you don't know how to use Photoshop, that would be your first step.
That's a learning process and you can't be told specifically how to use it.
Search for Photoshop tutorials on google or in the Photoshop section here on the board.
If this isn't what you're asking, then clarify what you want to know.
Tell us what 3D apps you have, how well you know how to use it, how well you know how to use Photoshop.
