I think using a Wrap deformer instead will do that.
I've heard maya 5 lets us use any nurbs object as a sculpt deformer. Someone please tell me this true!

yup
Maya 5 does support it
but it gets REAL heavy and its only nurbs...

holy shit, muscle systems just got 100 times easier in maya. Thanks for the good news.

Ive found that it really only does a good job when it a really dense NURBS surface....but i still have much to learn.
Ok most muscle systems are at least based in part on this paper : http://www.accad.ohio-state.edu/~smay/Human/human.pdf the examples in this paper work best in maya if done using nurbs surfaces. However muscles are just one part of the equation there is still fat and skin to deal with which is a whole other mess. But bieng able to use nurbs muscles like the ones in the paper I linked and making them sculpt deformers makes hacking the skin simulation a ton easier.

Wow that is great news, I for one am not that bothered by it being a heavy process as the reults will be quite worth it, and i know from freind who are using "Absolute character tools" for 3DS max that it can also get quie heavy when many muscles are introduced.
