View Full Version : Character: Amy Builds A Giant Robot
WingedOne 04-30-2003, 10:38 PM This is my latest idea for a Zbrush project.
It's a 2D sketch right now, but will be evolving into a 3D project.
I'll be posting updates from start to (hopefully) finish as I go on.
Right now, this is a pre-preliminary :) rough sketch of the idea I had in mind.
Next step will be refining the lines in black and then doing a few color scheme tests.
C&C welcome.

Interesting idea...
I realize it's a rough sketch but you might want to work on her proportions a bit. Her legs and arms seem too big for her body. And you might also want to consider approaching the composition of this picture a bit differently to try to create a more dramatic scene. Maybe some stuff to the front left (crates, tool box...) might help. Just some suggestions. Hope you don't mind. Keep us posted.

Here's a minor update.
I worked on fixing Amy's proportions as well as working on the composition as suggested.
I need to shrink the size of the wrench a little bit.
As always, C&C welcome.

It seems like this'll go through some pretty profound changes when you start using 3D tools... hard to c&c something in such an infant state, I think...
But, as far as I'm concerned, you CAN'T go wrong with the concept of a girl excited about building a giant robot! Go Go Go!:bounce:
What program did you model/render that in? heh, just kidding.. not sure that drawing is to accurate or very useable as a modeling reference. Might work as some part of a storyboard. Please, work on a front and side character drawing. Line it all up and start some modeling. Just a thought.

Here's the latest update.
I made the wrench and screw driver a little smaller and I changed the eyes a little bit. I also darkened in the lines and added some highlight and shadows.
Next step will be doing some larger sized head studies of the main character and trying out some different color schemes.
As always, C & C welcome.
DMAK: Thanks, I'll do that. :)
After that, I'll start working on the 3D models.

Here's a head study I worked on, so I have a guide to work on when working on the face.
Tried to see how she'd look with glasses.
I also tried a couple of different color combinations. Not sure which of these three I like the best.
Next, I'll do the full-body sketches and then start work on the 3d modelling.
As always, C&C welcome.

Here's a full-body sketch which will be used as a guide when building my ZSphere model.
Next step will be starting on the Zsphere model for Amy, then I'll start on the designs and modelling for the giant robot.
As always, C&C welcome.

Here's the latest update. Using the above sketch as a guide, I started working on the adaptive skin model.
The hand still needs a little work. After that, I'll pose it and finish off the details and textures on the model.
Top image is the Sphere model.
Bottom image is the adaptive skinned model with a little bit of preliminary modelling.
As always, C&C welcome.

Here's the latest update. I'm almost done with the Amy model.
This is the first time I've managed to complete a human model that started off as an adaptive skin, rather than a unified skin.
After I'm finished modelling and texturing her, I'll start work on the robot.
As always, C&C welcome.

Wow, I'm suprised at how closely this resembles your initial sketches... There's all kinds of enthusiasm in this piece, and I dig her face and that hair is so much fun! Shouldn't her earring be a different colour? I dunno about that "coordinated" look...
There are some anatomy issues that you may want to correct...
The calf of her left leg needs to taper much earlier than the ankle. That looks really wrong, and is worth changing (more like the right leg).
The hands are pretty odd; you're gonna hafta study hands more, as much of a pain-in-the-butt as that may be... It'll be worth your while.
Same thing goes for feet.
The texture and edges of her shirt look sloppy. There isn't enough distinction between the edges and her skin, and it's uneven and wierdly lumpy looking.
Are her teeth running over her lips?
And if she's finally FINISHED with her bot, then I think she'd be a bit dirtier. That kinduv work gets you filthy. At least a little bit filthy, and it's a visual bridge that establishes a connection through time... And throw some dirty rags somewhere.. You get the idea
Oh, and those flip-flops look huge (or maybe her feet need to be bigger)!:D
I hope this helps, and doesn't just irritate! :)
