Title: FrogBot in Stereo
Name: Andy Murdock
Country: United States
Software: 3ds max, finalRender

This is a stereo image. In order to experience the effect, you’ll need to cross your eyes till a third center image converges in the middle.
Sit back 24inches from the screen with the image as large as you can make it; full resolution. You must have both eyes open at all times, that’s what makes it stereo.
Look at the center of the side by side image . Slowly begin to cross your eyes until there appears to be three images before you. You will need to relax your eyes a bit, and be sure to keep your head level with the horizon of the two images. The image will seem to snap in place and create a real 3d sensation.
Also you could try placing your finger at the center of the two images, focus your eyes on your finger as you bring it slowly to the bridge of your nose. When it appears that to two images have converged into one behind your finger, pull your finger away and try and focus on the middle image.
What is also helpful is to block out your peripheral vision with your hands after you have focused on the center image. Place your finger tips on your forehead and slowly block your side vision with your palms. You can actually block out the side images with your hands and leave just one image to enjoy.
Don’t spend too long in this cross eyed world.

that is so funny!

since the image has dof it enables you to focus on defocused objects (like the apples swimming in the water).

great image and great 3d effect! boy i love 3d.

what angle did you use between the two cameras?

Wow, that is really cool! This is the first time I see an image like this, and the effect is impressive. Are there any particular real-world applications for this sort of effect?

Not sure what the angle is, I just set the two cameras appart at about the same distance as the frogs eyes.
I work from a single camera, and when I'm just about done with the image, I create the other cameras. You'll need to put the targets for the cameras in the same spot and use that target distance for your focal blur distance setting.
Since you are crossing your eyes to see the effect, the camera on the left renders the image on the right and visa versa, otherwise you would need to have your eyes uncross or both look outwords to have the right image on the right side. It's far easier to cross your eyes and refocus then to have your eyes look outwards.

As far as real world applications for this effect, anytime you want to see a stereo image without special glasses, there you are.

I attempted to do it but I feel like my eyes won't go back if I cross them for more than 3 seconds:eek:. Very cool frog.:applause:

It's best to close your eyes and look away when you are finished looking at the image or you may never be able to pull yourself out.

Generally a cool idea, however it did not work for me. When I cross my eyes so much that they do blend together, then it is all blurry. They are too far apart for me.But nice render nevertheless

Great image. I have to say that put a smile on my face. I couldnt quite get my eyes to cross properly, then i sat there for about 20-30 seconds trying it and eventually it just happened...what a strange sensation, you can almost feel your brain saying, "ahh, there's the image". Very cool :)

Here is a great example of some stereo electron microscopy.

I can't manage to make these kinds of images appear for me. My eyes can't go crosseyed :( The further back I go, the less the image splits. But the nearer I go, I can't see the entire image

I do know about 3D imagery though. If you'd have made it an anaglyph image, I could have done :p

The easiest method is to place your finger between the bridge of your nose and the center of the image, focus on your finger tip and move your finger closer or further away from your nose until you have a center image on the screen that converges. Tilt your head to the left and right to help focus.
