Its pretty impressive. Blazing fast and its so nice to be able to use all the built in render tree nodes. They pain-stakingly wrote 3delight equivilant shaders to everything in the render tree which is converted on the fly.

I thought 3delight was free for the first license which doesnt seem to be the case anymore. Is that a recent change?

Nothing has changed. This is a plugin for 3D app that you pay for. The first licenses of the renderer is still free and can be used with other apps or plain RIB as well.

3Delight for Maya was also free. Maybe that's what he meant by '3Delight used to be free'.

It still is free (maya plugin) from the looks of it.

The free 3DFM is restriced to 16 lights. But it also isn't as well integrated as 3DFXSI. 3DFM is more of a hybrid between an artist friendly tool and a TD-friendly scriptable bit of a pipeline.

3DFXSI strives to be a complete mental ray replacement. Making that work is considerably more effort. I guess that's why they decided to not make a free version. Although I agree it would be cool if they did, they're pretty much the only feature film heavy duty renderer vendor giving anything out for free at all. :)

I think 3Delight for Maya is limited to 4 lights...

But does anyone know, If I already have a free 2 licence for Houdini, if i bought 2 more, does this entitle to me to the XSI plugin as well?

So basically it's $190USD per licence, I'm looking at getting either two or four more, in addition to the 2x free licences i already use in Houdini.

The free 3DFM is restriced to 16 lights.how can you call it 'free' if it's restricted to 16(or even 4) lights is still a mistery to me. I think 3Delight should take the step to sell properly their products and not just trying to say it's all free. I have the feeling that the strategy.. it's-free-but-at-some-point-you-have-to-pay-for-this-and-that.. is just self-defeating.

No one says the plugin is free. You confuse the plugin with the renderer. The 3Delight standalone renderer is absultely free and not crippled in any way for the first two threads; including commercial work.

3Delight is a standalone renderer. You can integrate it so that it works as a plugin renderer or integrate it so that you just dump RIBs that then get rendered by the standalone.
3Delight for Maya has this mode and so has 3Delight for XSI (in fact, the Artist edition does not support RIB dumping at all).

Again: the standalone version of the renderer, which you can use from XSI through e.g. Affogato (open source, free) or from Maya through Liquid (open source, free) is totally free and unrestricted for the first two threads.

There's no false advertising here, just people not reading the 3Delight webpage properly.

Hey Guys,

The light restriction is no more for a very long time now (more than a year)! So the first 3DFM license is complete and free.

Calm down and please read website and docs before actually making self-defeating comments about us.

First license of 3DFM and 3Delight is completely free and without any restrictions and it runs 2 threads.
We don't ask you anything, we just give you a free license (even for commercial use). If you want to be kind, you can use it and report any issues you might have.
If you are not happy, there is some contact infos on our website and we will be glad to hear your comments.
