If you mean the 3DMax-ASCII-files, then you should look at DeepExploration from RightHemisphere. It does a nice job in converting those to LWO, even though there are some problems left with surface colors, transparency and glossiness...

Deep Exploration is great. The demo is even fully functional for a short time.

Also, for Deep to be able to convert a MAX file, you need to have that version of MAX installed on the workstation. if all you have is a MAX file and not the 3DS MAX program, Deep won't convert it.

:shame: Sorry CTRL+X, but that is NOT true for .ASE files (that is why they are good for exchanging files with max users - better than obj or 3ds). I use them all the time...
Another tip: .ASE files can become very huge because they are text files. To save them econimically, be sure to compress them with zip (maximum compression) or something the like - it will shrink them to a 10th of the original size.
The nice thing about DeepExploration is, that it can handle zip internally, so you can preview files inside zip archives! They are handled like ordinary folders....
Hope that helps,

Hi, Thanks for your replys.
I have a copy of max at work so converting them to a more usable format is no real problem but it would be nice to beable to load them directly into lightwave!
Deep exploration is the next version of 3d explorer right? It was very cool for browsing all the models I had on my hdd when I was looking for the right one.
Thanks again.

Deep exploration is the next version of 3d explorer right?
Yes, exactly. It is great for 2D too, has a nice renderer integrated for previews and with a geforce-card, it is very fast and can do some amazing realtime preview... ;-)
Try the demo version...
I just can't imagine companys like Newtek or Discreet supporting those 200+ 3D-formats floating around... They have better things to do (I hope).
Another nice option to try is the free FBX-Plugins from Kaydara, available for Max, Maya, XSI, Lightwave...
