3d is pretty much Maya even though I have worked with other package and I would love the opportunity to become an XSI guy.
Illustrations photoshop but I have worked with Art Rage and I find its my first choice to work with.
Compositing, Aftereffects, while I would perfer working with a node base comp. AF is just so easy to get up to speed with.

That being said, in my opinion software is never the thing that makes the artist. Solid classical art skill is everything. In the long run, its better to first learn the classical skills of drawing, design, painting and animation. While there are some Software that are more user friendly than others, software is always secondary.
