hey, how do people (you guys) usually approach the modelling of clothes that are on characters?
do you first model the complete underlying form of the character, and then model the clothes seperately and somehow place them on?
or do you do it all at the same time (while modelling the figure)?

im especially wondering about clothes which wrap around a character quite complexly, but still retain an element of free-form movement about them..

thanks!

It depends.

If you want to use the cloth module in Maya I suggest you take the garment-creation method since it works better (and faster, from my own experience) than hand-modeled clot.
Just play with the settings untill you get the clothing to look the way you want.

On the other hand, if you plan to simulate your cloth by using softbodies any modeling technique will work.
