View Full Version : Matte "extension" =)
DSedov 04-30-2003, 08:40 AM Hello! This was done for a feature which is a graduation directorial debut of my close friend. The full scale is 2k image, I try to include a detail shot as well. I really need your comment because I composit it all togather with other elements tommorow, which is, if you guess, a deadline =) So please, through all the bad stuff in here, I beg =)
Thanks a lot in advance.

Hey DSedov,
Overall, I think it's a really good piece of work, and would probably fly as-is.
That said, if you really want suggestions, the ones I would make would be:
a) Tone down the saturation, and adjust the color balance a bit (its a bit too "hot").
b) Work on modeling the lighting a bit more. Looking at the original, you can see a bit of a "gradient" (dark to light) across the main portion of the roof, whereas the same area of the matte seems a bit "monovalue". Also, note how bright the extension on the left is in the original, versus the matte (which seems more desaturated than bright).
I've made a really quick comp to help illustrate the ideas:

Otherwise, top-notch work! I imagine all the tiling must've been a royal PITA...
:surprised
Cheers, and good luck with yer deadline!

This is really very impressive, for a quick glance, you could leave it as it is.
However, while looking on the composition for a short while some points stand out:
1. As already mentioned, the roof is to evenly lit.
2. The tiles on the ridge seem way too big to me.
3. Before I considered the original, the front parts of the building seemed to be very bright.
4. The parts made up by you look a tad sharp and clean, so they may need to be slightly blurred and have some noise added.
5. Fantastic work, man!

Ah... you're right.
The scale is a bit big on the tiles as well... especially those on the top ridge.
Comparing them to the size of the window frame, I'd guesstimate them to be at least a couple feet wide (which is pretty darn big).
And yes, a bit of irregularity/noise would definitely help as well (notice the uneven lighting between individual shingles on the foraward face of the original's right-side extension).
Cheers,
b
Ps. How long is the shot? Most of this stuff is gonna be moot in a quick cut anyhow... As I always say, "If the viewer isn't going to notice the difference, why put it in?"
If you're worried someone's going to pick it apart in slo-mo, just think about the sense of accomplishment you'll be giving them by leaving in some minisule error for them to find!
:applause:
hey
there's a piece of roof flying:rolleyes:
some kinda wiggly thingy
nice work thoug
I agree on the roof looking a bit monotone
makes it look flat
g'luck with it
