View Full Version : female character study
alrighty, i'm new to this neck of the woods... I've been messing with Flash and Photoshop since their beginnings... going into 3D seemed like a huge mistake during school... didn't learn much from the incompetent instructors, so my characters were in the form of linked spheres and cylinders. anyway, it's been a few years coming... i was burned out on 3D and went back to 2D... but, just saw some really cool work by Michael Roger and it really inspired me, so i thought i'd give 3D another go... thanks dude!
here's a WIP:

here's a wireframe rendering from several different angles... sorry for the highly compressed image.

Ah - always difficult to comment on stylized creations as improvements are often in the eye of the beholder. The only thing that struck me is the way the nose runs into the forehead - it just looks a bit like the forehead has become a little bumpy because of this but maybe that's just the angle we're looking at. Yep, 3D is nice to get into although not so fun when you have instructors who aren't exactly inspiring.
This is looking good - kind of like a J.Scott Campbell creation
i agree about the bridge of the nose... it seems to stick out a little far... i think i need to bring the brows forward more or something... maybe i'll just stick a helmet on her and not worry about it... lol. thanks for the feedback! i appreciate it.

nicely stylised...
but really reminds me of the Joan of Arc tutorial by Michel Roger on 3Dtotal.com
if it was an honest coincidence... fair enuff, but if you used this as a basis then it would have been nice to mention where you got the 'inspiration' cos i've seen so many people using this tut and 'claim' it as theirs

Maybe this was an edit, but it seems like he mentioned the inspiration to me. I understood, having learned 3d using the very same tutorial myself.
I agree about the nose, the body looks good though man. Modeling a pretty female face can be rough. It definitely takes some practice. Just keep at it:thumbsup:

no, it wasn't an edit, otherwise there would be a "Last edited by"
at the bottom :)....
anyway, its a good tutorial so why not use it to learn....
the model is coming along nicely!!! keep going...

yeh it is a good tut.. i've used the 'modelling the ear' section.. very helpful!
and you've pretty much got it spot on apart from the nose comment.. good luck with the whole 3D venture

good start
i think the mid section is to long on the torso
and the face needs more fore head i think
but it is a good lookin model
thanks guys! i appreciate the positive feedback. Yes, i do like to give credit where credit is due... and I do give credit to Michael Roger for the inspiration =) (thanks imderrickyo for clearing things up). I do give credit to myself also for spending sleepless nights in front of the computer studying these techniques. =)
i know what it's like to have one's work/ideas "ripped" off and given no credit for, so I have mad respect for artists i learn from and always give them credit if I "borrow" an idea or if they sparked some kind of inspiration. the industry is a small world believe it or not, so it's not smart to burn down any bridges.
this has been a really good study for me. thanks again guys! more to come soon...

Looking pretty good. Did you make the breasts the same way the tutorial explained? I'm having so much trouble with my breasts! Heh, that sounds a little strange, lol!
i spent quite some time tweaking the breasts cuz they didn't look right at first. i did a lot of improvisation when it came down to the nitty gritty details as the explanations were pretty vague, but the screenshots he used are so good, i didn't really read much into the instructions.
in my model, the breasts are actually not 100% curved like they're supposed to. I could have added more vertices/edges to have a better shape after the meshsmooth is applied. I'll include some screenshots here for you that might help out.
the key thing to make the breast look as though it wasn't defying gravity (i.e. sticking straight out) is to have the main breast area overlap or hang-over the baseline where the breast is connected to the chest cavity. there are about 5 vertices/edges that make up that basline.

here's another shot to show how the breast hangs over the baseline.

i'm pretty satisfied with the way they turned out, so i'm not gonna mess with them anymore. i figured they don't need to be perfect since i'm gonna cover them up with a costume or something anyway. gotta find a limit sometimes when it comes to perfection... ;)

I don't know if its me, but her body just looks a bit too long...
Well done on the non-gravity defying boobs tho. Its not often you see someone getting them right!

Oh and I would recommend anyone to try the online aquarium too! Its fun! I managed to kill all the fish tho
Fallensword, thanks for trying out the fish tank LOL! There's a lot going on in there, so anyone with a slow computer (less than 800mhz) might experience some sluggishness cuz it's very cpu intensive.

anyway, yeh, her waist really is a bit long... sorta like an anorexic or something. i may just modify this chic to be more like Xena =P
something random: have u guys seen the new Ninja Turtles toys? man they look great, I had to buy one. Only like 5 bucks at Walmart. 8 bucks on Amazon...ouch.
