What you need in the first place is a good reflection map. I suggest you try an hdri map. This will break the uniformity of the color.

If you'd like to create reflections, wich represent the autophotos shoted in studios, build a dark chamber around the car (visible only for secondary rays), place huge white planes into it (only sec rays again)
render and watch

Well first of all, the hdri map needs to be converted to a .map file.
To do that, use the hdrtoxsi.exe that you'll find on www.edharriss.com. I believe it is explained there how to use that little software.
Then, in XSI, witch your Explorer to Current Pass, click the pass icon, go in the Environment Shaders tab, click Add, choose Envronment. Select the Environment item that appeared in the list, and click Inspect.
In the ppg that opens, do New > New From File, then choose the .map file.
Play with the shader settings.

Okay... you're in trouble. The problem is that XSI 3.01 can't create map files, the command is broken.
So someone has to send you the hdrtoxsi.exe application, since it's the only way to create those damn map file with XSI 3.01. Send me an email and I'll ship it to you.
However, if you still have a copy of XSI 3.0 at hand, I suggest you re-install it and use its command prompt to create the .map file. To do it, launch a XSI command prompt, browse to where the files to be converted are, and run the following:
imf_copy -v filename.hdr filename.map map rgba_fp
Note that you can convert any kind of supported picture file to .map files with this command. It's the same command, replace the .hdr by the appropriate extension, and don't put the rgba_fp.
Finally, I suggest you create a pyramidal .map file, no matter what your file is hdr or something else. This will reduce ram consommation during rendering. To do that, you just have to put -p after -v.
imf_copy -v -p filename.xxx filename.map map
Btw, all this stuff is in the manual. If you look, you'll even find a command to perform a batch conversion of files. ;)

Okay.... didn't know that.
Well, the hdrtoxsi.exe will work, but not the native XSI commands.

if there is no HDRI pass, use a less efficient, but similar solution.
place around your scene a sphere, and create an UV for it
for the sphere's surfaceshader connect a CONSTANT illumination node
to the CONSTANT's radiance subnode connect an image node
Use final gathering
(look for the tutorial on www.edharriss.com, there you will find an exact tree too)

my reply is not based on my limited knowledge of XSI 2.0.1 and I'm NOT here advocating Maya Products but -
1) if the Maya Studio Tools Auto Gallery section ever comes back online, have a look at the way lighting "picks" out the profile (called a Core Line) of a car model. That's because professional Car Designers and Illustrators use it in Car Design Houses.
Most car shots I've seen on CGTalk lose that so its hard to tell the accuracy of modeling. The Core-line is an area that shows the join between two surfaces - normally the top surface and the side panel surfaces. Chevrolet Stingrays had a really clear "core line" if you ever need to check.
2) DONT use magazine autophotos to work from for lighting. That was one of the first lessons drummed into my head when I was learning the skills of car design.
Cheers! ( now back to the XSI manuals..!)
