View Full Version : What is the best Renderer?

Hello Render Experts. Let me ask you this: What is the best Renderer out there that is both cheap (or free), and easy to use. And can work with Max. I see all of these beautiful GI renders all the time, and it makes me sick, because I just don't get that kind of quality with Max's scanline renderer. I've tried using BMRT before with the MaxMan connection, but it was too confusing, and I couldn't get it to work. But maybe I should try harder?

Hi, try out brasil (http://www.splutterfish.com/)'s free demo, it doesn't have every feature unlocked but you can get a very good quality with it. There's also mental ray (http://www.discreet.com/products/mentalray/) offered for max, but I think I'd stick with brazil if I were you, the connection between 3dmax and brazil seems much more solid.

For a bit cheaper alternative you could try finalRender (http://www.finalrender.com) or Vray (http://www.vrayrender.com/)

Remember that is not only the renderer the most important part of 3d is the guy in front of the monitor

You are asking an interesting question. One that is not that easy to answer. I'll give it a stab.

The best renderer depends on the kind of work you are going to be doing. GI looks great but takes its time. If you are looking at cranking out some stills but not much animation than the Brazil beta is your best bet. It does great animation but it does not sound to me like you have a renderfarm at your fingertips and you will need this to get anything done for real.

Entropy is very good. It does GI but not as good as Brazil in my opinion. It's displacments however ROCK! so if you are texture heavy and like displacment maping, this one is for you but you will have a bit of a learning curve to get it running.

Final Render is OK. I have 2w licences and don't use them. Want to buy them???? (joke) It is a nice program but I think it was rushed out to the market before it was ready and I noticed a few corners were cut to get the "Speed". You can get some nice results but it jsut does not cut it for my applications.

Hope that helps.

paconavarro: True but some times the guy behind the monitor is drooling at the beautiful GI rendering of someone else's model and growling at the ugly scanline rendering quality of Max.

ErickG: Thanks for your input. Yeah, no renderfarm to draw from. I'll probably check out the Brazil beta in a few days.

Actually Brazil pub test 0.4.53 is free and has no timelock.

So its like you get a brand new a very powerfull render for 3dsmax.

As far as I know you can't get a free/trial version of either Vray/fR/Mental Ray.

Brazil doesn't have a timelock? I read on their website that you are limited to...I think 60, or was it 90 days to try it out? Can you use it beyond that time and they don't care? I've been holding off downloading Brazil, because of the restriction on how long you can use it. I don't want to download it until I really need it. So if this is true let me know, I'd love to download it now and start playing with it.

I received an e-mail from vRay that they will be posting a free demo or something like that on their site soon. But that was a couple weeks ago I think, so I don't know how soon they mean.

The timelock remove was one of the new things about 0.4.x pub test.

But I don't understand why the timelock kept you from trying it out. Since 0.1.3 came out there have been only a day or two were very few people had thier brazil limelock running out of time. :)

Check it out... its great. and free.

I haven't used scanline more than a few times in the past year. And I'm NEVER going back.

that is some of my old brazil alpha tests

The VRay demo is now out:
http://www.vrayrender.com/demo/

The demo is a fully functional version of VRay Advanced including all features except Distributed Rendering; the images produced by it are watermarked; it is timelocked; and it will not save the renderer parameters to MAX files.

Anything similar(free GI renderer) for Maya in the works?

ilasolomon

free?...i don't think so, wait for Brazil & VRay for Maya
but wait...i think it's atleast one option: BMRT from exluna.com
it's free & has GI, but you need something like mayaman to
get hand on it! (to render with it) & mayaman is not free! :)

for max, use brazil....

for maya, use mental ray. it renders GI and caustics, and it also comes with FinalGather, which does even better GI for maya. Not free, but worth the price.

or buy LW for $995 as another 3d user and get the beaver project to conver your maya scenes to LW for rendering.

PRMan 10.0 :bounce: (kidding)

Personally I prefer FR for Max, it's fast enough for me and I love the quality, especially after long hours of tweaking :)
Brazil also seems great, though I didn't really get to play with it yet..

I don't know if you have to spend money or hurry before the trial expires...

I'd suggest staying with the scanline renderer. It really isn't ugly! I even put it after LW's renderer. It's just hard to make it look good, but by using a few tricks with effects (like unclamp glow), lights (fake radiosity, "dome GI"...), materials (falloff for specullar, mixing shellac materials...) and playing with the AA filters some, you can increase the render quality dramatically... :bounce:
+ I must mention that it's the fastest renderer.

But maybe it's just me... My style is not to use ANY additional plugins or renderers with Max. I'm totally agreed with Paconavarro here!

Hey Insect666 I agree. After fooling with Brazil for a little while, and then stumbling across a tutorial about advanced lighting...forgot where sorry. It brought to light that though Brazil looks awesome, the scanline renderer works fine and is super fast. It's all in how you place the lights.

Cheers.

That's nice to hear, Windarr. :)
Now about that tutorial: maybe it was one of these?:

http://www.geocities.com/pixelmagic2002/Page1.html
[An awesome GI tutorial! Worth checking out even for advanced artists.]

http://www.3dlight.com/page-lighting.htm
[matching lighting in compositing.]

http://www.3dlight.com/page-softlights.htm
[This one's very usefull for making realistic lighting.]

http://www.3dcafe.com/asp/tutorials/max/volume/volume.asp
[some basic practice with volume lights.]

http://www.3dtotal.com/team/Tutorials/Jenns3pt_tut/3ptlighting.asp
[I like this one... It makes your characters look much better.]

http://www.3dtotal.com/ffa/tutorials/max/striplight/striplight.asp
[VERY usefull! may be used instead of a softlight, but is not easy to apply to animations.]

If not - I recommend to check them out! Really good - those tricks really make the renders look better.

Not sure if it was one of those, but thanks for all the listings, I'll check them out in a little while.
