Hello.. I've been working on a head for maybe a week off and on. Looking for any critiques. Probably the best head I've modelled yet. Thanks!

Great work. Only criticism is that the ears look too low.

This looks very nice - I've had to look close to find anything wrong with it - the low ear thing has already been mentioned - I personally think the bit of skin separating the two nostrils looks a bit thin plus the muscle of the neck - I don't think that should come down vertically just below the ear - (correct me if I'm wrong any anatomy gurus out there)

Otherwise....nice model!

Fantastic! The only things that stand out have already been mentioned - the low ears & the thin septum. But he still looks great! I really like how you handled the corners of the mouth & surrounding area. :applause:
Wireframe please??

Thanks for all the responses! I will post updates as I get to them. The ears have more issues that just being to low, probably hard to see in the render, I need to smooth out the front of the ear with the head, you might notice it jets out a little too much. I was curious to see what everyone would notice.

This head was created in 3dsmax 5.1 using box modeling, symmetry and meshsmooth. For anyone still new to head modeling, I've found that a good reference picture (www.fineart.sk) can help guide your model. Without it, you end up with alot of strange features that are out of proportion. Also pick up a good anatomy book ("Atlas of Human Anatomy for the Artist" is my favorite so far). Anyways, I'm no expert myself.

Anyways, here are the wires:

 Looks great. I agree that the space between nostrils is too thin, and the muscles of the neck look a lil strange in the first shaded image. Other than that good stuff. (and those are pretty minor problems)

alrighty... lets' see here :p

This is by far your finest work. Generally the proportions look great. I think the ears are a bit on the large side as well as being in the wrong place - they need to be higher. You should also work on their attachment - where the upper front part of the ear attaches to the head, it looks too much like webbing - that should be more solid.

The corners of the mouth need to be tightened up - they round out a bit too much. There is also a ridge in the middle of the chin. (it's small but it bothers me.. :) )

I agree w/ what's been said so far regarding the nose and the neck as well..

I checked out your animation... I know it's an early test of your bindings and envelopes - it definately needs more work. The jaw opening doesn't stretch the face as it should - it looks as if it's simply moving the jaw vertecies down and that's it, no residual movement over the lower facial area.

the neck bindings are also a bit odd - not enough stretching of the skin.

My other concern at this point is regarding the polygonal topology of your model - there are a bunch of 3 sided polys (not so bad) but also a good number of 5+ sides. That won't go well when you start in on morph targets. Looking closely at your initial render and referencing your wire cage I believe you can see some surface artifacts because of the odd polys.

That said... it looks really great as a WIP. Seeing your work evolve to this point is really fantastic. I'm looking forward to updates on this. You've really turned a new corner w/ this piece... keep it up.

The critiques are getting very good, thanks everyone!

A quick response to altruizine, first off thanks for the detailed response. On the topic of the 5 sided polys, I'm not done. :) As for the ears, I modeled those guys seperate and attached them to the head. Unfortunately in modeling the ears, I paid no attention to where I was going to connect them to the head. Ended up with a much more complex ear than I needed. And again, I'm still refining that area.

The animation was probably done to early. I worked on the envelopes for the neck a little while and came close to what I thought looked pretty good. However, the jaw, well I didn't really spend much time there. Thats all going to change.

Thanks for the motivation, and look forward to updates soon!

Ok, here are some updates, worked on the ears a bit.. resized, moved, and scaled. Corners of the mouth have been tightened up a bit. Also spread some of my edge loops for the eye cavity/cheek bone around to smooth it out just a bit. Disregard the shoulders and chest area, just started working on that. Ok..

Excellent update - this is a very well constructed head. The only minor niggles I have with it now are just the ears. In the side view theres a sort of thing sticking up just above the ear hole which I'm sure isn't normally there - plus the ear hole itself looks a bit too dark...the rest looks great. Well done!
