Hey Guys,

next week I will start my bachelor thesis.
I will do a 3d trailer for a taekwondo championship in traditional forms(pattern).

My idea is:

the humanshaped taekwondo cup comes to life (the golden surface bursts into many pieces and we see the man under that surface)

So the man starts doing the pattern with exciting kicks and punches. (I will create a nice choreography(I did 5 years Taekwondo, so I know how to do it)).

In the end of the form the guy does a highkick and he gets frozen to gold, starting from the leg to the rest of the body.

This pose will then transform to 2d and will be the logo of the worldchampionship.

Ok, now you know what I'm gonna do.

My question is:

I think I will model the human(who is at the same time the human shaped cup)
in 3Ds max. The texturing could then also be done in max.

Ok, now it comes: How about the rigging?
Should I do it in max or in maya?
What would you propose me?

I know that I will animate him in maya.

For the rendering I am not sure, but I like the vray renderer.

It would be nice if you could give me some advices.

Neither program is better, but as you are animating in Maya it's obvious to go with rigging it in Maya. Porting a rig from Max to Maya will not work. Modeling and texturing in Max is fine and you can import the character into Maya with little to no problems.

As for rendering, that's pretty much up to you.

Ok, so I will model and texture in max,
import it then to maya. Rig it, animate it and then?
Can I render vray shaders with mental ray in maya? I think no.
I want to use vraymaterials if its possible. I like the look of it. But that's not a must.
Is it possible to import the whole animation then to max and render it there with vray?
I don't think so.

What about just modeling in max, then importing it in maya.
Texturing, rigging and animating it and finally rendering it with mental ray? I think that's the only way it works.

How would you do it?
