View Full Version : Charcoal Portrait
Phugative 04-30-2003, 02:57 AM This is a portrait of my bro I did a little while back. Going through my work and figured I would throw it up. It's a 18x24 drawing, scanned in and the background was tweaked in PS. C&C welcome.

Great pic! I'm noticing some things about the hand in the foreground that don't look quite right... the thumb on that hand looks like it could be a bit wider or shorter, it almost looks like a finger instead of a thumb....also, the dark shadow on the bottom of the hand could be lightened up just a bit. For some reason that shadow isn't reading as part of the hand to me, which is making his hand look too thin. It could be just me, though......
It's really a great portrait! I love the pose and expression:applause:

Great picture. :)
I just wanted to say that something seems wrong with his left hand. I tried bending my fingers that far apart and I couldn't get close. The skin inbetween my fingers isn't nearly as wide as his. Maybe people just have different hands that way, but it looked weird to me.

Hey everyone, thanks for the input!
PsychedelicMind- This is a pretty lame scan and the image is huge, so it took me quite some time to finish about 6-10 hours. No martial arts, my bro is just strange.
wildsheepchase- the hand does look a little strange, but since i did use a combo of photo reference and real life, I think i worked some things out a little warped in perspective, hence the msaller thumb, but yes it does indeed need work in places. His pinky on that hand looks strange too (even though it is broken) it still looks wrong.
PANZER - as i said it both photo and real, I also do photography, so my hobbies mesh together nicely
Bilbo_Baggins- I agree, again i think it is the perspective thing, but I should have compensated for that.
Nimue - Yep I have tons of other chacoals, if fact here is a self portrait, this one made use of a photo refernce, about 4 hours, 18x24 charcoal.
Thanks again for the crits!

Wow, great drawings, superb shading skills, canīt wait to see more of your charcoals.
It also refreshing to see portraits with so twisted grimaces and hands.
