HI,
i would apprecciate if you could give some comments on an animation i have created using 3ds max 5 it's my first lengthy animation:

http://www.travisusd.k12.ca.us/vanden/clubs/robotics/Pics/movies/TEAM%20701%20VANDEN%20HIGH%20CREDITS.avi

I'm only a 9th grade and 14 so this software was pretty hard but i tried , looking back it's pretty simple, didn't use so many features i din't know about like raytrace materials ! and uses scaline -a
if u want pics first click here :

you are lucky to be learning 3D at 14...you have a good head start on most people...

Thank you , i'm happy 2 have a good head start !, but more over what do u think of the animation it self ?
If you think thats good check out some other high school teams ! also i made mistake it was made in 3ds max 3. (not 5 which is at school) thats why don't have any sky light ! but i believe alot of these teams had hellp from professionals i saw one that looks like it was rendered w/ PRMAN which isn't even a Autodesk product Cough PIXAR Cough helped them most likely
alot of the anims are great though

ssyed-

your stills look interesting, and i would like to check out the animation, but i don't have the time to download 85 mb!

maybe try compressing it using Windows Media Encoder???

it's FREE, and does a nice job. (BUT, it only writes .wmv files.)

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/encoder/default.aspx

keep it up!

Nice animation, but the camera movement is terrible, don't use so
much camera motion, and not so fast as in here, it's confusing.
there is no plot here right? or there is and it's not so clear..?
the space stuff is moving way to fast, i barely saw something,
the animation itself of the object is very good.
but try to fix the camera motion..

BTW you can try converting the film to Dvix codac, and it will not be so heavy.. you can bring it to 15MB with great quality...

lol!!!!
Holy Crap, dude, I didnt think that other FIRST people posted here. This is crazy...what a coincidence. I'm from Team 74, yo!

And I'm 17, I should get around to posting some of my work in a little while, as soon as I see that It is up to the caliber of work that I see here(meaning a loong time, but im working pretty hardcore). This forum is pretty inspiring though isnt it?

As soon as I have it downloaded I'll post what I think of it. I think I've seen your animation before, but I cant really remember it.

In my opinion, you had a good concept and models but your animation, lighting, and the speed with which the animation goes doesnt really do everything justice. You could probably run this thing at 1/2 speed and it might look better that way. Obviously you couldnt do this for the competition(only 30 seconds allowed), so you should probably work on planning it out more.

Jeez, your camera totally sucks. I mean, theres no other way to say it, In my opinion you need to really look at how movies and other animations use cameras, and work on it. I like a lot of parts of your animation, the part with the brain and stuff is really good. Finally, I would work a lot on your animation of your robot and your character. I would do a lot of animatics and test animations if I were you.

i agree man thanks for the comments, i know know this was my first time ANIMATING although not first modelling so i tried putting in way 2 much stuff to a small time frame , the camera hmmmm....
i was going for a matrix effect but had not enought time to do the sweeps so what happened instead was just crap load of jittery ugly animation
i'm so sorry i can't post another copy i have only 56k at home , my teacher upload this for me, i will try maybe compressing it w/ divx

Hey, nice screenshots at least, I'm 17, and I havent made anything as final as this, can you give us more information on the contest that you made this for? I have never heard of the FIRST group, but it sounds interesting. We should make a list of all the younger people on this forum, in my situation, none of my friends in normal life have any idea about computer graphics, and its a bummer when you can't share your work with peers that will appreciate it.

i'm 16, don't bother making your friends go cg or animation go out meet 30yr olds upwards that are in the industry.

here here i'm bit to lazy but some1 should start a age group poll
just to ruffly see how old everyone on the fourms are.

ok, FIRST Robotics is a program you can learn about at www.usfirst.org. Basically, you have 6 weeks to build a robot and then compete with it. Animation is a smaller part of FIRST, but basically you have to summarize in a maximum of 30 seconds what FIRST means to your team. I think we had about a couple hundred teams submit this year, but most of the animations really suck. My team, #74, won three regional animation awards. Once I get some time I'll probably upload it somewhere. FIRST distributes an educational copy of MAX to every team for the purpose of this animation.

yeah, our animation would have probably made the top 4 at the western conference except it DQ'ed for copyrighted music we still showed our animation but not judged for the contest, next year we'll try to win this thing
