View Full Version : Sell me on C4D
Furious 04-29-2003, 09:06 PM Tell me why I would want to choose C4D over other packages such as LW, MAX, Maya or XSi.
Having just opened the demo, I like what I see so far....
...but, is this package as robust as the others? Is there good support?
Thanks.

I dont know what to say really save yes and yes...lol. Its a great app for the price. SLA is wicked sweet as well. The problem is, I am not qualified to give you specific reasons/examples though, sorry. I havent tried any of the other. The other thing I can say is that after trying other apps (demos and such)...if C4D doesnt sell itself then it isnt the one that suits your technique/workflow/attitude.
For me..its all  :xtreme: :drumrock:  :drumrock: :xtreme:
Anyone else?

it's more robust, stable and solid than the others (crashes far less often).
the support is great, there are maxon people going through these boards, pretty much always willing to help with technical problems, as well as of course everyone else here who'll gladly help out with any problems, the cinema community is good.
beyond that, it's whichever package you prefer to use. cinema's closest competitor is probably lightwave, although in workflow ways it's probably closer to max. maya nd xsi have many more features than max, lightwave or cinema, however they have a learning curve to match, cinema is the easiest of the high end apps to learn imo, it's also got a great really fast render engine inbuilt (much faster than lightwave), and much better quality than the inbuilt max or maya render engine, though of course maya now comes with mental ray, which while not so fast does produce amazing output in the right hands. and with max you can buy third party render engines like brazil, or final render (which is what cinema's render engine is based on).
of course, with all the high end apps it's quite hard to decide because they're all capable of the same output pretty much. though i would say that cinema has the best and fastest workflow out of all the apps i've tried, though i've not played around with xsi yet.
good luck with your choice.

i have tired all the demo versions and currently using C4D and LW... both are great programs, but C4D is much easier to use plus it is more stable, i have never seen it crash, and has a faster render, plus no stupid dongle to worry about going out on you
it really is the person not the software, but LW does have a few tools for modeling I wish C4D had, but there is always new great plugins coming out for C4d so in the future those few might be included, then again C4D has stuff you won't find in LW, Max has some great poly tools, XSI animation tools etc the list goes on... Also if you are a student, both Cinema and LW are under $400 and if you upgrade to commercial versions, they both cost $800 each, XSI, Maya, Max is way more expensive...
try the demos then you'll know which one you like..

Thanks for the replies and the link.

aww come on I was hoping for another 150 responce thread.
Man I just love C4D, and one thing that makes C4D cool is the modularity.
I mean that you can get the base package for 595$
that has got to be the cheapest of the Big ones.
i.e MAX Maya XSI LW C4D.

I am using some high-end apps (maya, xsi, max, c4d), but i have to admit for certain reason Cinema 4D is much better than all.
When the output and the way how u get it (workflow) accounts, C4D is unsurpassed, and this is the matter of the real question.
One thing that this software is seemengly not so widespread or advertised unlike other packages, but it is changing as even great studios ane after another start using it.
If it had built in scene linking which would enable workgroup functionality ther wouldn't be any question at all, but I beleive great studios solve it with inhouse developements (some plugins).
It has the most understablable concept of 3D, and related things.
It has the easiest, and most customisable interface
It has the most logical structure, which will help and not hinder
It has a solid ground which enable the software to emerge, to build, to add functionality without sacricing the abovementioned sentences
It has a great non linear modeler.
It has a superb built in texturepainting module.
It has a very-very powerfull realtime dimacs system
It has the most powerfull particle system
It has the most powerfull scripting system, moreover, yeah it is visual if u prefer it above command line scripting, but u have command lin also
It has one of the most powerfull nonlinear animation system, with on screen motion curve editing, and of course it is totally easy to use
It has the best renderer in the world, regarding all aspects, quality, speed, posteffects, qonfigurability...
It has a lot of comfy quality, like U can handle not just a single sceene at a time, which is so important when U want to proceed speedely...
It is the most stable app, never crashes
It is cheap enough to buy
....
....
....
OK it lacks this and that, but which app doesn't?
But Maxon Computer listens.

I agree with almost what i've read so far, but the most important thing imo is: "you want a feature that you still don't have? Ask it to Maxon, sooner or later you'll have it for sure". Their support is INCREDIBLE.

Have to agree with this. I use C4D for print work and more often than not my renders wll be dropped into QuarkXpress layouts. The difference between the companies attitudes and support is astounding - after dealing with Quark on a regualr basis for years, I can confirm that Maxon really are the proverbial foot and neck massage of the software industry. Quark are like the chronic hangover that you wish would subside, but keeps nagging at you all day like you've got a tight steel band around your skull.
