View Full Version : Transformers: Rig Demo

Hey yaa

This is a personal project that I did over 2 years ago. Never think I posted it on CGTalk… so here we go….

http://www.jervill.com/Rigs/McBell_rigDemo_image.jpg

I was playing around with rigging a transforming robot that was easy to use and had the transformation built in to the rig. I wanted to transform between 3 different stages and all of this should happen within the same rig.

Some quick info:
The rig is divided into 10 different sections that have its own transformation built into them, so they can be transformed by pretty mutch just sliding one attribute, quick and simple. But there is also the option to go in and manually animate a bunch of lower level attributes, to totally customize the transformation. The idea behind the 10 sections is that they can be animated "sort of" independently, so the animation becomes a little bit random depending on what order the sections are being transformed.
Another little idea that I really wanted in the rig was: the same main center of mass (COM) control for all the different stages. So there aren't no blending between different COM controls.. were the animator have to struggle to switch between controls.. I wanted to maintain the "momentum" of the animation between the stages.. and no annoying world space blending…
The modeling never really got done… it is really just blocked out…
The face is modeled after the coooolest robot ever... yes that is correct: Optimums Prime.
Yeah.. and parts of the mechanics is not really there jet.

superb! thanks for sharing! grrrrreat tips on that rig! 5* but by using blendshapes...wouldn't it only have one way to transform? i guess the only way to make it look different is with different camera angles.

That is amazing. I like how clear the rig transforms- I liked the recent Transformers movie, but I felt that the transformations were too busy and not as well designed as your work. I got to admit- I hate to rig, but this rig makes me wish I was good at it. Very impressive.

Nice work, just when I thought it was finished there was more 3 times, and then you fit all that into a 66 mb file, it seemed longer.

if you are'nt already in charge of animation on some cream job, I hope you enjoy your new job and are'nt to bogged down by all the offers that are on the way, to do some more work like this.

Incredible rig! Like what others have said, it would be great to see this fully rendered. How long would it take to really create a rig like this for a character, and did you use any mel scripting involved?

Hi

Sorry for the late reply.. crazy day.
Wow.. thanks for the front page plug and all the great comments! Really appreciate it.

Sooo..

How long did it take:
Hmm.. hard to tell. think I probably started playing around with the idea two and a half to three years ago.. and finished it around one and a half years ago. It was mainly a little Sunday night project, once a week kind of a thing to try out new ideas. The project survived at least two mayor crunch periods were I didn't look at it for months at a time. This was even before I knew that they were going to make a kick asss M.Bay movie with transformers.

My main idea was to see if I could jam in three different types of rig into one intuitive solution... with the functionality to easily transform between the stages over and over again.
In the beginning I was totally against the scaling issue.. and tried to fold every single panel to fit inside the different stages... but after seeing the scale difference and a brave attempt to fold a helicopter to fit inside a car, plus sharing that space with a robot skeleton... I had to cave in to the evil world of scaling stuff. That always bugged we.. back in the days.. those cartoons were so alive, no question about it.. but as soon as Megatron transformed into a tinny tinny pistol, it just didn't seemed real.. :) hahaaa.. it broke the illusion for me.

So some techies that I am using... I am blending between different skeleton for different stages, I am heavily relying on the blendNode instead of constraints. With some time spent creating a good hierarchy structure, the ”slow” constraints can be switched out to wicked super fast blendNodes. Some constraints were carefully used on statical spots.

Set Driven Keys... Yes.. A lot of the transforming parts are driven by SDK's... but on different control levels. Also I wanted to do the rig as unbreakable so some of the SDK stuff is controlled by a node network of conditions. For example the transformation starts happening from robot to helicopter, and the whole transformation depends on the right hand gripping the rotor blade. The animators have good presets to get the hand to that place manually, but at a specific time in the transformation the hand needs to grab the rotor.. if it is not there a condition kicks in and make sure the hand gets there in time. A couple of these coditions were used to make shore the transformation part would be super easy to use.

Thanks once again!

Kevin.. whatz up man? Do you know that my ultimate dream is to one day rig on a skatermatt production! :)

American!! hahahaa

Thanks Anton, Akin & Vinh for the mirror help

Peace

Wooo..

Sorry for being a little bit absent.. really slammed right now!

Thanks for the awesome response and feedback.. never really taught that so many people could appreciate a rigging demo! hahaa...
When I say those words out loud, it sounds like the most boring thing ever... I get sleeping just by the sound of it.. or maybe I just need some sleep..

Anyways, Thanks again!

I "hope" that I get some time of over the weekend to get some more info up on this post.
And yes.. I have to dig up the rig and take some screen shots of the curves for the SDK's.
If I remember correctly.. there should be a time laps system hooked into the scenes.. think I need to put that together as well... could be cool.

I've always shown your Clinton rig to people saying, "I wish I had the time to do something like this." And now this... man... truely inspiring. And you did it on Sunday nights while working? No repetative stress in juries to show for it? ;)

When someone asks me, "Hey Jer, do you remember that transfo-..." and I'll dump the 13MB quicktime in their lap. Even if it's 5-10 years from now (I still have Clinton).

Yet again showing that animators make the best (animation friendly) rigs. In my opinion.

Thank you for the inspiration refueling. I needed that.

When people say that Maya is better for animation than max, (I´m max fan btw) I always put in doubt. But when I see a rig like this the truth that I have no other option than to give the reason for Maya users. Because do not I imagine hell as well do something isimilar in max. Actually I think it is not possible and correct me if I'm wrong.

Of course incredible rig, congratulations
