View Full Version : Transformers: Rig Demo
02-06-2008, 11:03 AM
This is a personal project that I did over 2 years ago. Never think I posted it on CGTalk… so here we go….
I was playing around with rigging a transforming robot that was easy to use and had the transformation built in to the rig. I wanted to transform between 3 different stages and all of this should happen within the same rig.
Some quick info:
The rig is divided into 10 different sections that have its own transformation built into them, so they can be transformed by pretty mutch just sliding one attribute, quick and simple. But there is also the option to go in and manually animate a bunch of lower level attributes, to totally customize the transformation. The idea behind the 10 sections is that they can be animated "sort of" independently, so the animation becomes a little bit random depending on what order the sections are being transformed.
Another little idea that I really wanted in the rig was: the same main center of mass (COM) control for all the different stages. So there aren't no blending between different COM controls.. were the animator have to struggle to switch between controls.. I wanted to maintain the "momentum" of the animation between the stages.. and no annoying world space blending…
The modeling never really got done… it is really just blocked out…
The face is modeled after the coooolest robot ever... yes that is correct: Optimums Prime.
Yeah.. and parts of the mechanics is not really there jet.
Ha... I am on youTube, thanks to Roberto. Thanks!)
Hi... got two more mirrors... and one with bigger resulotion:
(Thanks Vinh! I owe you one)
(Thanks Anton & Ballistic!)
Here is a video of some early animation tests and a quick demo of the basic controls for the rig.
New Temporary Mirror(Thanks to Akin, THANK you sooo much for the help!!!):

Excellent ! I agree with the previous post. Front Page Material.
02-06-2008, 12:06 PM
superb! thanks for sharing! grrrrreat tips on that rig! 5* but by using blendshapes...wouldn't it only have one way to transform? i guess the only way to make it look different is with different camera angles.
02-06-2008, 12:53 PM
thats one damn nice reell mannnn... u should have get a render of it... 5 starts from me dude..... Amazing workkk..... i liked it ALOTTTTTTT

Very impressive stuff! Really nice rig!
02-06-2008, 02:52 PM
Dude that is just too friggin cool.
The fact that you've got a car-to-optimus transformation setup is one thing....but then, in the same rig, having him also transform into a copter??? IMPESSIVE!!!
02-06-2008, 03:16 PM
Nothing else but amazing! OMG! :D
That s so great !

Holy Crap that is an amazing rig... Great work man!
I'll host your file on my server as a mirror till you get some more solid hosting:
I'm working on doing something about that once I can pull the file off your machine :)
02-07-2008, 01:28 AM
Absolutely incredible! This is just so cool, I'm watching it over and over again, lol. You've definetly accomplished what you set out to do. 5 stars.
02-07-2008, 01:30 AM
okay its working for me now
THAT IS SIMPLY AMAZING!
02-07-2008, 01:32 AM
Simply wow. That transformation looks better than the one's in the movie. Simply because it's the same every time and things aren't intersecting so much.
Keep up the great work.
02-07-2008, 01:33 AM
I haven't posted here in a while, but your rig is really something to comment on.
Great work! 5*
02-07-2008, 01:42 AM
Wow, that was awesome! Hopefully the next Transformer movie can have multiple transformations like that!
02-07-2008, 01:54 AM
You can find a copy of this on Jervill's portfolio at:
*edit : I think I arsed up the encoding sorry :(
02-07-2008, 02:00 AM
You are now my favourite rigger. I so will use you as a inspiration for my college units :)
p.s. clintan rig was amazing :)
02-07-2008, 02:02 AM
Wow, that is one Very Groovy rig! i wonder how it could be built in max... *ponders*
02-07-2008, 02:30 AM
Viva la front page! Congrats man.
02-07-2008, 02:50 AM
Man, I love watching nice rigs. Just something about it functioning properly and exactly is very satisfying :) I wish I knew more about rigging but I one can't learn everything about everything all at once. Great work, congrats on top row
02-07-2008, 03:22 AM
Great work!l plugged
02-07-2008, 03:31 AM
That was quite good. It reminded me quite a bit of the old television series of the 80's. I especially like that the helicopter, car, and robot all look great in their respective modes. Well done!
02-07-2008, 03:33 AM
wonderful work bro! I salute ur skills!
And Wonderful idea and execution on the 2nd transformations!
02-07-2008, 04:32 AM
major props, absolutely amazing stuff!!!
02-07-2008, 04:53 AM
Oh, haha. This is great, man. Love it.
At some point it has to compensate with scale, but the speed of change is incredible.
02-07-2008, 05:18 AM
Mattias! Awesome rig man, so cool to see it finished! Congrats on all your work at DD.
02-07-2008, 05:36 AM
Really impressive and just down and out right awesome work man!
02-07-2008, 06:14 AM
That is amazing. I like how clear the rig transforms- I liked the recent Transformers movie, but I felt that the transformations were too busy and not as well designed as your work. I got to admit- I hate to rig, but this rig makes me wish I was good at it. Very impressive.
I'm speechless. How long did it take you to do the whole rig?
02-07-2008, 06:41 AM
WOW. What kind of voodoo $#!t is this?
That's amazing. And the fact that you can transform in to 3 forms is super awesome. The rig also looks very flexible, which is heavenly for an animator. :buttrock:
02-07-2008, 06:49 AM
Nice work, just when I thought it was finished there was more 3 times, and then you fit all that into a 66 mb file, it seemed longer.
if you are'nt already in charge of animation on some cream job, I hope you enjoy your new job and are'nt to bogged down by all the offers that are on the way, to do some more work like this.
02-07-2008, 07:19 AM
Excellent work! Truly amazing that you did all those 3 transformation in one rig. That rig looks awesome to play with!
02-07-2008, 07:49 AM
wow! amazing rigg:eek:
soon as i saw this rigg i thought to my self, this dude must have been working on transformers movie! and i went to see your home page and indeed you have been working on transfomrers movie:eek: thats so cool!!!
can you tell us how much scripting went in that rigg???
02-07-2008, 07:57 AM
I have an upcoming project that needs to show some transformation. I'm really glad you did post this, including the demo. I now have some idea on how to tackle my project. Thanks!
Great job!
02-07-2008, 08:06 AM
Incredible rig! Like what others have said, it would be great to see this fully rendered. How long would it take to really create a rig like this for a character, and did you use any mel scripting involved?
02-07-2008, 08:16 AM
Great stuff Mattias!!! congrats to FP.
02-07-2008, 08:35 AM
wow! Very very cool! I would love to see this in a high quality rendered short.
02-07-2008, 08:45 AM
Sorry for the late reply.. crazy day.
Wow.. thanks for the front page plug and all the great comments! Really appreciate it.
How long did it take:
Hmm.. hard to tell. think I probably started playing around with the idea two and a half to three years ago.. and finished it around one and a half years ago. It was mainly a little Sunday night project, once a week kind of a thing to try out new ideas. The project survived at least two mayor crunch periods were I didn't look at it for months at a time. This was even before I knew that they were going to make a kick asss M.Bay movie with transformers.
My main idea was to see if I could jam in three different types of rig into one intuitive solution... with the functionality to easily transform between the stages over and over again.
In the beginning I was totally against the scaling issue.. and tried to fold every single panel to fit inside the different stages... but after seeing the scale difference and a brave attempt to fold a helicopter to fit inside a car, plus sharing that space with a robot skeleton... I had to cave in to the evil world of scaling stuff. That always bugged we.. back in the days.. those cartoons were so alive, no question about it.. but as soon as Megatron transformed into a tinny tinny pistol, it just didn't seemed real.. :) hahaaa.. it broke the illusion for me.
So some techies that I am using... I am blending between different skeleton for different stages, I am heavily relying on the blendNode instead of constraints. With some time spent creating a good hierarchy structure, the ”slow” constraints can be switched out to wicked super fast blendNodes. Some constraints were carefully used on statical spots.
Set Driven Keys... Yes.. A lot of the transforming parts are driven by SDK's... but on different control levels. Also I wanted to do the rig as unbreakable so some of the SDK stuff is controlled by a node network of conditions. For example the transformation starts happening from robot to helicopter, and the whole transformation depends on the right hand gripping the rotor blade. The animators have good presets to get the hand to that place manually, but at a specific time in the transformation the hand needs to grab the rotor.. if it is not there a condition kicks in and make sure the hand gets there in time. A couple of these coditions were used to make shore the transformation part would be super easy to use.
Thanks once again!
Kevin.. whatz up man? Do you know that my ultimate dream is to one day rig on a skatermatt production! :)
Thanks Anton, Akin & Vinh for the mirror help
02-07-2008, 08:59 AM
well I would have o lie to be not impressed. But since I cant lie...
02-07-2008, 09:14 AM
Congrats for setting the standard man.
Lobbyn om fem? Kanske ses till siggy i år. :)
02-07-2008, 09:21 AM
GJ! reeaaally nice one :)
I would love to play around with that rig.
No words.Totally amazing!!
02-07-2008, 10:32 AM
From now, you're my idol...
02-07-2008, 11:00 AM
If there is a rig awesomness scale that goes to 10, this is a solid 19!
Me, I just want to see it rendered.....!!
02-07-2008, 11:02 AM
cool cool cool. :bounce:
u should make a tutorial and get some monye from it
great job u should render it also and make a short animation
02-07-2008, 11:32 AM
Wow thats a really nice rig. You have put alot of work into it and it shows.
02-07-2008, 11:37 AM

looks great, just awsome
02-07-2008, 03:41 PM
DAAAAAAAAM! Holy Moley! Unbelievable! I can rig up what I thought was pretty complex, but DAMN! How did you do it? How many hours did this take? Dude, if you don't have a job as a TD, I'm sure by the end of the week you will.
Thanks for sharing. Thanks for the inspiration!!
02-07-2008, 04:55 PM

Holy crap! That rigging was insane! The animation was also really well done to show everything off! Excellent work man, 5 stars no doubt!
02-07-2008, 08:12 PM
so uh...any chance that you'll put up the rig itself for download?
i would love to animate this guy.
02-07-2008, 09:24 PM
THat was sick as heck. Good job man. That double transformation at the end just sealed the deal for me! I was like "What is that a sword? Cool. ohhh! what? Copter? he's ... oh Wow!" :scream:
02-07-2008, 09:47 PM
02-07-2008, 09:51 PM
02-07-2008, 10:01 PM
Meh, now if that was a good rig you could've put the whole transform on one slider...
..Naa I joke, I joke. That's bloody awesome mate, had me flabbergasted to no end.
very inspiring stuff!
It is not often that I'm blown away by a rigging demo...I'm blown away, well done.
02-08-2008, 03:56 AM
Congrats on finishing the project. It is awesome!
02-08-2008, 05:23 AM
I love the transformer movie, but what you did there, blows the transformations away like a nuclear explosion.
Your demo should be on the front page forever; wicked.
02-08-2008, 06:18 AM
crazy, can I see SDK graph editor? lol
02-08-2008, 07:31 AM
WOW! amazing! makes me want to rig something! Set Driven Keys! yay!
02-08-2008, 09:16 AM
a work colleague showed me this yesterday ... good that it's found its way onto CGtalk (and a deserved front page)
02-08-2008, 09:47 AM
Sorry for being a little bit absent.. really slammed right now!
Thanks for the awesome response and feedback.. never really taught that so many people could appreciate a rigging demo! hahaa...
When I say those words out loud, it sounds like the most boring thing ever... I get sleeping just by the sound of it.. or maybe I just need some sleep..
Anyways, Thanks again!
I "hope" that I get some time of over the weekend to get some more info up on this post.
And yes.. I have to dig up the rig and take some screen shots of the curves for the SDK's.
If I remember correctly.. there should be a time laps system hooked into the scenes.. think I need to put that together as well... could be cool.
Over and out,
02-08-2008, 10:43 AM
huhuhu ! just wow
really cool rigg , good conception , if you have some free time , would you try with a big mesh ( 6mlls tris ) :D ( i have one , but i have some difficulties more make a good rigg :D )
congrats for this master class setup
02-08-2008, 10:59 AM
Friggin amazing. Jawdropping and just plain cool.

02-08-2008, 02:08 PM
Fantastic, i saw your video on youtube. It's really impressive the way it expand, the transformation, car to robot and to elicopter. And the animation too.
Great work man. :)
02-08-2008, 02:29 PM
i'm blown away.
if i ever had any aspirations to learn rigging, i left them behind with my jaw ^_^
02-08-2008, 03:38 PM
02-08-2008, 03:46 PM
DAMN! can i say damn? That is so awesome! This is why I dont do rigs LOL.

Talk to you soon!
02-08-2008, 06:57 PM
Good lord man. You need to find a woman.
How've you been? Happy to be gone from Blur? - I know you secretly miss us over here. Fantastic rig, seriously crazy work. I'm annoyed you didn't teach me some rigging before you peaced out.
Hope all is well man.
02-09-2008, 12:07 AM
Impressive work, really inspiring
02-09-2008, 01:03 AM
02-09-2008, 01:49 AM
That is an insane rig, wow. Nice work!!
At the risk of sounding stupid, what are blend nodes? Blend shapes?
02-09-2008, 02:07 AM
I've always shown your Clinton rig to people saying, "I wish I had the time to do something like this." And now this... man... truely inspiring. And you did it on Sunday nights while working? No repetative stress in juries to show for it? ;)
When someone asks me, "Hey Jer, do you remember that transfo-..." and I'll dump the 13MB quicktime in their lap. Even if it's 5-10 years from now (I still have Clinton).
Yet again showing that animators make the best (animation friendly) rigs. In my opinion.
Thank you for the inspiration refueling. I needed that.
I know what I'll be doing with my Sunday nights. You've eliminated excuses.
02-09-2008, 06:43 AM
Hey I want to see the Clinton Rig :-D Really impresive
02-09-2008, 11:16 AM
That's unbelievable. I'm not believing it, even after seeing the video. My god that's the best rig i've ever seen. RRRing..Open the door.. ILM's knocking.
02-11-2008, 12:37 AM
Skater Matt awaits you! But in the meantime when are we gonna do lunch!? I can't believe I've been here for 9 months and we still haven't got together!
03-02-2008, 06:57 PM
03-02-2008, 07:27 PM
Love the transformations, wouldve been nice to see some elements of the previous stages carried on to the last phase. I'm curious to know if you have any new projects going on, keep the ideas flowing!
An idea is one thing, but execution is king. Keep us updated bro.
06-21-2008, 06:19 PM
awesome work, & best of all *sharing*…..

im so amaze to this thread im loving it
and ive learn a lot...
06-23-2008, 03:46 AM
That was sweet. I could maybe figure out one transformation in a single rig... in a few months... but 3 separate vehicles?! Insanity!
06-23-2008, 04:58 AM
Realy Greeeeeeat Work .
this work on vfx and composite will be supreme !
06-23-2008, 05:02 AM

06-23-2008, 09:03 AM
holyyy shit, this is amazinggg
07-22-2008, 09:19 AM
CRAZY!! Just CRAZY!
It's one of the most awesome rig i've seen... great job!
11-14-2008, 01:51 AM
That was just pure awesomeness. I wish somebody would do a tutorial on this. I've been wrapping my head around trying to figure out how to go about doing this in 3ds max. Excellent work!! Freakin excellent WORK!!
When people say that Maya is better for animation than max, (I´m max fan btw) I always put in doubt. But when I see a rig like this the truth that I have no other option than to give the reason for Maya users. Because do not I imagine hell as well do something isimilar in max. Actually I think it is not possible and correct me if I'm wrong.
Of course incredible rig, congratulations
