View Full Version : Madame Mouse
Don-Drennan 04-29-2003, 08:05 PM I just recently registered on this forum. Looks like a good one.
I've been working on this mouse character for the past two weeks. I started it a long time ago and decided to finish it up and make an animated short with it. I thought I'd put up a picture here and get some comments on it. It's not quite done yet, still some texture issues to deal with and then tweaking the rigging before I can animate it. It's supposed to be a cute French female mouse torch singer.
It's made with Lightwave 3D 7.5 with Sas-lite hair.
Thanks,
Don

Here's just another angle
I've been working on the texture mapping, but you probably can't see it.

Very cute! I like the expressive face and the eyes are nice. Could use some more detail in the ears and palms ... pawms? The fur is a bit sparse generally, and on the arms in particular. Nice work--keep it up!

I do want to add more detail in those areas. I'd like to have the ears be translucent and show some veins when the light is shining on the back of the ear, but I'm not sure how to do that exactly. Maybe that's too much for such a cartoonish character. The paws need a bump map for sure. I'll have to split up the surface of the body to get the fur to stick up more on the upper arms.
Thanks again,
Don

Can't really add more than what has been already said - its a refreshing change to see a furry character being modelled though so kudos to you for doing something a bit different. Do mice have white hairs in their ears like cats do? This is great work, Don! Keep it up :applause:

I think I might add some hair to the insides of the ears as well as more detail in the texture map. From what I've seen there's usually a little hair in there but it's very fine and not very visible.
I just remodeled the ears and they need some work yet.
Thanks again,
Don

I'd like to post an animation test but this forum won't let me.
Which forum will allow animations to be posted?
It's still a WIP so I can't post in the finished work forum. I couldn't find one that seemed suitable. It's only 750K.

Hi Don:
The lack of reply looks like people are having difficulty linking to your anim. If you don't know about them already, you can always post at: www.lwg3d.org - they are a Lightwave only group and a terrific bunch of guys. The other Lightwave only group that I know of are at www.simplylightwave.com - not as well populated as lwg3d but you can still find some great art and resources there. Best of luck with it!

wow, nice peice. The only thing that I can mention (besides what has already been) is the fur at the top of the arms looks a little blurred out and is a little distracting. Besides that it looks great. Also, I am having trouble viewing your animation.

Really nice hair, but you should give her hat a texture don't you think??

If it's because you couldn't get to it, here's another link:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ColumbusMovieClub/files/mousetest-radio.avi
It has unrestricted file access.
It is compressed with the Divx codec if that's the problem. It can be downloaded at Divx.com
I'm still wondering why this board won't let me upload animations. It's a fairly small file, but I guess they figure most animations are bigger.
Thanks for the crits,
Don

Here's a more recent render. I tried to put more fur on the upper arms.
The hat is supposed to be like a felt beret. Maybe it should get a slight bump map? I suppose I could scan some felt.
Has anyone been able to look at the animation (link in previous post)?
Thanks,
Don

Don - yep the animation worked splendidly for me. Looks like you've got a certain soundtrack in mind as well that she's singing along to. Careful not to overdo the felt beret...maybe a bump map will work on this, but it looked okay to me. Good work so far!
