the attached image show a single object(split into 2 sections) with one material assigned to it.

my question is: how can I make the reflection continue over both sections rather than being abruptly (and noticeably) split, as in the image?

well i'm assuming you are using a map for reflections here. but i think if u set the mapping type of the reflection map to sphical environment on both materials, they should line up, being that teh mapping would be reliant on the scene-object orientation rather then object mapping

you could also make the reflectioons raytraced and put the reflection map in the environment slot, also set to sphical environment mapping, and that should give you about the same look, with the addition of the objects reflecting other objects as well.
