View Full Version : NVArt - Amazing Creations - Winners!!
salmonmoose 02-04-2008, 11:31 PM Hey,
NVIDIA and CGSociety have announced the winners of the first NVArt competition. The competition theme was "Amazing Creations", imagery that could exist only in a virtual, imaginary world.

The winning art was unveiled at a reception at the San Jose Museum of Art on Friday. The event was keynoted by NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang and featured remarks from digital arts gurus Lorne Lanning (of Oddworld Inhabitants) and Mark Snoswell (President of the CGSociety).

Congrats to the winners. I personally preferred some of the Honorable Mentions to the placing winners, but they were all very top-notch.
Not trying to bash CGTalk at all, but these Nvidia contests are a refreshing alternative to the long, drawn out CGT Challenges. There will likely be 3 or 4 of these contests in the space of just one CGTalk contest. I know it's a ton of work to host any kind of contest like these, but it's nice to see shorter turn-around times and subjects outside the realm of dragons and babes and spaceships (as much as I like 2 of those 3!). Just wish I had time for any of them!

All of the images are fantastic but I don't really feel like there was anything new. I think the problem is that a lot of the entrants just went for fractals or blobby liquids and I'm not sure how I feel about that. I was very tempted to run a simulation through Realflow or throw some numbers at a fractal generator but, to me, it seemed like a long way from "art". It's also debatable whether a lot of the entries, including the runner up's actually fitted into the brief of "imagery that could exist only in a virtual, imaginary world"...but one of the images given for inspiration was a car made from wire so I guess the rules were flexible.
Well done to all the winners

While the pieces rendered were very striking , I honestly expected a little more artistic consideration of subject matter based on what was being asked of the entrants. There seems to be little compositional effort and most of the pieces are isolated, vignetted subjects against and indescriminate backgrounds. The rendering is excellent and is unquestionably accomplished but as stand alone pieces of art I believe the jury ran a diffrent direction than the breif(though they all certainly fulfill the "digital" quality that was sought.
Many compliments to the winners. It is a pleasure for me to be in a contest with so many talented guys.
I think the submitted works are an honorable effort to achieve the declared target. It's not so easy, now, to make a scene that's quickly identifiable as 'just with digital brush'. Many of the pictures you can see on the press and in the multimedia world try to obtain a different purpose. Just to hide the computer and digital presence.
So many of the artists involved in the contest didn't forget our general attitude and made a lot of 'photorealistic' images.
Anyway this is just a marginal issue. The quality of the contest is really great.

First of all I would like to congratulation to all winners. these image are fantastic, but I'm also a bit disappointed becouse these are CG generated fractals. Most of the images are made with some value and iterations. Almost no need for modelling.
Otherways that was a great contest and congratulation to everyone :)

I agree on how some images, while polished and proffesional-looking, did not look original, and I agree on how fractals are generally less impressive than more "manually-made" art.
Still, I really enjoyed watching all the images and reading the artists' stories, and I thank this great website for such interesting and insightful articles and competitions.

Yeah, what happened to them? One of the contest participants, a finalist, I think, spammed every entry with a "goodbye cruel internetz" speech (something about contest entrants who didn't follow the rules), then the posts disappeared altogether.

Congrats to the winners, it was great competition.
And I like this debating about the character of Digital Art, it’s a new art and it should have its unique independent character.

Some every nice work done by all and it has got me stimulated. I agree with others here that it would have been nice to see a little less hyper real looking work. Good stuff tho and I hope we will see more of this.

Beautiful artwork by all means, but in this business art work is a stimulation of the senses so it doesnt matter how you accomplish this image.Cheers to all of you.

Wonderful artwork. I don't give a rat's if there wasn't evidence of "real modelling". That, in my opinion is just evidence of some misplaced 'work' ethic.
Beauty and composition is captured, caught, seen, realized, rather than achieved "through hard graft". Hard graft is for everyone. The eye is for the artist.
Look around. How many Art Directors at your shop? How many modelers? How many times have you thought "wow, that person's got a great eye" or "I wish I had seen that possibility."
Don't diminish these folks work. They should all be congratulated.
