Ny times reports:

LOS ANGELES — Informal talks between representatives of Hollywood’s striking writers and production companies have eliminated the major roadblocks to a new contract, which could lead to a tentative agreement as early as next week, according to people who were briefed on the situation but requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak.

A deal would end a crippling writers strike that is now entering its fourth month.

The agreement may come without renewed formal negotiations between the television and movie writers and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, though both sides still need to agree on specific language of key provisions. If that process goes smoothly, an agreement may be presented to the governing boards of the striking Writers Guild of America West and Writers Guild of America East by the end of next week, the people said.

I hope this is enough to save BSG and Heroes.

It's sad that disagreements like this always have to be resolved by such drastic means.
Makes you wonder why whatever agreement they have come up with now couldn't have been arrived at in a more civilized manner 4 months ago. :hmm:

Just to add some balance to this thread - and seeing as how the NY Times article was dated from days ago - here's a recent quote from a letter sent to guild members. This is from a TV Guide .com update yesterday (2/4/8).

As the WGA itself stressed in a weekend letter to its membership,
"We are still in talks and do not yet have a contract. When and if a tentative agreement is reached, the first thing we will do is alert our membership with an e-mail message. Until then, please disregard rumors about either the existence of an agreement or its terms."

Basically, nothing is set in stone yet. While the rumors might be true, there's basically still a media blackout. I guess, to prevent thing from breaking down at the last minute.

There are things that the writers need to nail but may have a hard time doing.

Payment and Residuals of TV productions directed to the Web and mobile markets.
These two are emerging and having heard of some plans, it's where the key audience and advertising are migrating to.

LINK - Battlestar Webisodes - Key point of contention (http://blogcritics.org/archives/2006/09/12/063843.php)
LINK - TV Migrates to Cell Phones (http://www.livescience.com/technology/080205-squint-tv.html)

The emphasis on Internet based productions for TV and Cable networks is clear. Unfortunately (TV production as we know it) is feeling the same effect as Newsprint and Magazines. It's a tough call on what to expect. Take a loss in broadcast now and grow into sharing in Web based revenue later.

WHY
Key advertisers are web aware and are moving more of their dollars into the web space. These are just some of the key points of contention and I don't expect a binding contract to rise up anytime soon. NBC actually made a profit since the strike started. More people are moving to DVDs and Web based entertainment as the strike continues.

The writers look to be behind the 8 ball on this one.
